Words cannot express how grateful I am to have such a supportive group surrounding the Waldo County 911 Center. In public safety, when tragedy strikes one part of the flag, it affects us all. Whether you are a Police Officer (Blue), Firefighter (Red), EMS (White), Corrections (Silver), or Dispatch (Gold), we all feel the same pain—WE ARE ALL FAMILY!!!

I can only speak from my color of the flag as the 911 Director (Gold), but the support we have seen following the tragic incident at Robbins Lumber on May 15th has been incredible. Our small center has received gift baskets, flowers, care packages, food, gift cards, cards, emails, phone calls, and the list goes on. This may not seem like a lot to some, but to a dispatcher, it means the world.

Dispatchers are a rare breed. We often never see the light of day, working in buildings sometimes with no windows or in basements of older facilities simply because that was the only space available. When tragedy hits the communities we serve, it impacts us in different ways. Sometimes it hits full force because the center is small and we know the people involved. Other times, we receive no closure at all—once we disconnect the call, there is no one to tell us the outcome.

Just the fact that we have community support and people checking on us makes the dispatch world a better place to be. For that, I say THANK YOU!! And the dispatchers say THANK YOU!! to everyone who has reached out, sent something, or simply taken the time to check in.

Due to a large-scale mass casualty incident currently occurring in Waldo County, the Waldo County 911 Communications Center is actively coordinating emergency response operations and managing a high volume of emergency communications.

If you are a member of the media, please do not contact the 911 Center directly at this time, as all personnel and phone resources must remain available for emergency operations. A formal press release will be issued as soon as operationally possible.

As we recognize National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, I want to take a moment to acknowledge and celebrate the extraordinary professionals who serve as the backbone of emergency response here at Waldo County 9-1-1.

This year’s recognition is especially meaningful as we also celebrate 25 years of Waldo County serving as a Public Safety Answering Point for our communities. For twenty-five years, dedicated telecommunicators have been the first point of contact during someone’s worst day—providing calm, clarity, and lifesaving support when it matters most.

While many people see police officers, firefighters, and EMS personnel as the first responders, the reality is that every emergency begins with the voice on the other end of the phone. Before anyone arrives on scene, before lights and sirens, there is a dispatcher answering the call, gathering critical information, offering reassurance, and coordinating the response.

Our dispatchers are the unseen heroes of public safety.

Each day and night, the team at Waldo County 9-1-1 demonstrates professionalism, compassion, and resilience in ways that often go unnoticed by the public. They manage chaos with composure, make critical decisions in seconds, and provide strength and reassurance to callers during some of the most traumatic moments of their lives.

They are the calm in the middle of panic.
They are the voice of reason in moments of fear.
They are the connection between crisis and help.

What impresses me most about this team is not only their skill, but their unwavering dedication. They handle the difficult calls, the emotional calls, and the unimaginable situations with strength and professionalism, then move on to the next call ready to help again. The mental and emotional weight they carry is something few outside this profession will ever truly understand.

To the dispatchers of Waldo County 9-1-1: Thank you.
Thank you for your commitment, your sacrifice, and your tireless service.
Thank you for every long shift, every late night, every overtime hour, and every moment you put others before yourselves.
Thank you for being the steady voice people depend on in their darkest moments.
Thank you for being the critical link that keeps our responders informed, our communities protected, and our operations moving.

I am proud beyond words to work alongside each of you and proud to call you my team.

Melissa, Paul, Misty, Kelly, Devin, Jim, Paige, Noah, Dave, Blaine, Holden, Sierra, Ryan, CJ - thank you for everything you do.

As we celebrate this special week and reflect on 25 years of Waldo County 9-1-1 service, let us never forget that the heroes behind the headset are just as vital as those who respond in the field.

Happy National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week.

Hi all!

Telecommunicator Week is next week! We are doing something new this year, and we would love help from the community!

It would be so nice to hear from everyone we’ve assisted throughout the last year, and it’s important to show our appreciation for the FIRST first responders in public safety for Waldo County.

If you have any kind words, nice stories, or kudos for our center and dispatchers, please comment them below or message us. We will print these out and add them to an Appreciation Collage on our bulletin board at the center. Please do not give any specifics in terms of names and addresses. Also, please do not message us on here if you have an emergency or need help from us as this page is not monitored 24/7.

Thank you all in advance for your help! Stay safe, and we’re always here! 🌟🌟🌟

Hi all!

If you haven’t seen our director’s post yet, starting today, we are celebrating National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week at WCRCC. It’s a week to show appreciation for the dedicated professionals who answer 911 calls and dispatch emergency services. We love this week as it’s a chance to be seen as the true FIRST first responders, but more importantly we get to celebrate our co-workers and fellow telecommunicators across the country.

We try our very best to make sure each member of our crew feels appreciated and honored for their work. In the past we have done themes, planned meals, games, and little competitions. This year we would like to open up the opportunity for our community to share their thanks as well. Often, we are unable to really see just how impactful our work is on a day to day basis in the county. Many times we don’t know the outcome of our calls. If anyone is interested in sharing thanks for our dispatch team or would like to help show just how much of a difference dispatchers make, please feel free to either mail in letters/notes or drop them off to the Communications Center. We do ask that no one send in any gifts/food/money etc. We love the idea of receiving thanks in words! After all, it’s what we work with, and they can make all the difference.

Special thanks to our amazing staff here at Waldo, our director Mike, and a big thank you as well to all public safety telecommunicators, aka the unsung heroes of emergency response!

As always, stay safe and we are always here if you need anything! 🖤💛

This week is National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, and I can’t let it pass without honoring some of the most incredible people I know — The Dispatchers, 9-1-1 call takers at Waldo County 9-1-1!!!

If you’ve never sat in a 9-1-1 center, it’s hard to fully understand the weight these professionals carry. They are the true first, first responders. When someone calls for help, they don’t get a police officer, firefighter, or paramedic right away — they get a dispatcher. And in that moment, it’s the dispatcher’s voice that becomes their lifeline.

The team at Waldo is made up of people who give their all every single day (and night). They’re calm under pressure when things go sideways. They’re strong when emotions run high. They guide officers and medics to emergencies, talk people through life-or-death situations, and make split-second decisions — all while staying grounded, composed, and compassionate.

You don’t see them on the scene. You don’t see them in the news. But without them, the system doesn’t work. Without them, help wouldn’t come.

What truly amazes me about my dispatchers is their resilience. They handle call after call — some heartbreaking, some terrifying, some overwhelming — and they keep going. They carry so much of what others never even hear about. They hold the weight of every cry for help, every “I don’t know what to do,” every moment someone feels like their world is falling apart.

To my dispatchers: I see you. I hear you. I value you.
You are the voice that keeps our field units safe. You are the bridge between panic and help. You are the heart of our operation.

Thank you for every shift you’ve worked, (and every overtime shift you’ve worked) every life you’ve helped save, and every moment you’ve stayed strong when it mattered most. I’m proud to work beside you, and even prouder to call you mine.

Let’s never forget — the heroes behind the headset deserve just as much recognition as those on the front lines. This week, and every week, I honor you.

Melissa, Paul, Misty, Matt, Kelly, Devin, Lori, Jim, Paige, Noah, Dave, Blaine, Holden, Sierra, Ryan.

Thank you!!!!

Happy National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week.
