July 24, 2026

Homicide Investigation Update
On June 15, 2026, around 08:04 pm, the Belhaven Police Department received a report of gunshots in the 900 block of Elm Street in Belhaven.
Officers responded and located 55-year-old, Lemonte Crandell of Elm Street deceased. Officers immediately secured the scene with assistance from responding Deputies with the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.

The Belhaven Police Department requested assistance from the NC SBI and began an investigation.

As a result, the Belhaven Police Department obtained a warrant charging 32-year-old Dashauntis Tyrel Chase, of Old County Road in Belhaven with one count of murder.

During the investigation, Detectives learned 18-year-old Mary Evett of Gum Street in Belhaven is a known associate of Dashauntis.

On July 9, 2026, a missing person’s report for Mary Evett was filed when family members reported the last time anyone spoke with Mary was on June 18, 2026.

On July 24,2026, Dashauntis Tyrel Chase turned himself in at the Pitt County Sheriff’s Office. Dashauntis is being held in the Beaufort County Detention Center without bond.

Officers are still trying to locate Mary.

July 22, 2026

Homicide Investigation Update.

On June 15, 2026, around 08:04 pm, the Belhaven Police Department received a report of gunshots in the 900 block of Elm Street in Belhaven.

Officers responded and located 55-year-old, Lemonte Crandell of Elm Street deceased. Officers immediately secured the scene with assistance from responding Deputies with the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.

The Belhaven Police Department requested assistance from the NC SBI and began an investigation.

As a result, the Belhaven Police Department obtained a warrant charging 32-year-old Dashauntis Tyrel Chase, of Old County Road in Belhaven with one count of murder. At the time of this press release, Dashauntis has not been located, and law enforcement is asking for the public’s assistance with locating Dashauntis.

Dashauntis is described as a 6’1”, 160 lb. slender built male with a medium brown complexion. Dashauntis has a tattoo of a tear drop and birthmark on his right check and tattoos on his neck. Dashauntis was last seen with long black dreads with gold/brown tips on the ends, sometimes in a bun. Dashauntis is considered armed and dangerous.

During the investigation, Detectives learned 18-year-old Mary Evett of Gum Street in Belhaven is a known associate of Dashauntis.

On July 9, 2026, a missing person’s report for Mary Evett was filed when family members reported the last time anyone spoke with Mary was on June 18, 2026.

Information obtained during the investigation indicates Mary may be with Dashauntis. Mary is not considered a suspect and there is no active arrest warrant for Mary in the death of Lamonte Crandell.

If you have any information on the location of Dashauntis Chase or Mary Evett, you are asked not to approach and to contact Belhaven Police Department at 252-943-2242, or your local law enforcement agency by dialing 911. You can also contact Beaufort County Crime Stoppers at 252-974-6400 or submit a confidential tip online at www.p3tips.com/195. Beaufort County Crime Stoppers is offering up to a $1,000.00 reward for information leading to an arrest. Crime Stoppers only wants your information, not your name.

A sincere thank you to the Beaufort County Sheriff Scott Hammonds for stopping by the Belhaven Police Department this morning with breakfast for our officers. Even more appreciative for his willingness to ask how the Sheriff's Office could assist our department.

It's reassuring to know we have a Sheriff who believes in supporting local law enforcement and is always willing to lend a hand when needed. Strong partnerships like this help us better serve and protect the citizens of Belhaven and Beaufort County.

The intersection of Main Street and US 264, just before the bridge, is now OPEN to traffic.

A special thank you to the Belhaven Volunteer Fire Departmentand the Pantego Vol. Fire Department - Station 83 for their assistance with traffic control and helping keep our community safe during this incident.

What an amazing time at our Casting with Cops event this past Saturday! 🎣
We had a fantastic turnout and loved seeing so many families come out to enjoy the day. From fishing to archery and of course plenty of hot dogs. There was something for everyone.
A big shoutout to our young anglers: Jessica Cox who reeled in the biggest fish of the day, while Gavin Adams earned bragging rights for the smallest catch! 🐟👏
We’d also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to our generous sponsors who helped make this event possible. While many preferred to remain behind the scenes, your support truly made a difference and we are incredibly grateful.

Today we recognize Lt. Battle and celebrate an incredible milestone, one year of dedicated service from our Lieutenant. In this short time, she has already made a lasting impact on our department and the community we serve.

She holds the distinction of being the first African American female to serve in this position in Belhaven, and carry the title of Lieutenant. That alone speaks volumes, but what truly sets her apart is the way she leads every single day, with strength, professionalism, and genuine care for others.

Her commitment to the community is clear in everything she does. She shows up, puts in the work, and leads by example, earning respect not just through her title, but through her actions.

It’s truly a privilege to serve alongside her and to have her as part of our agency.

Belhaven Police Department – Community Care Update

Our office administrator Mrs. Bonnie and Sgt. Pruett put together and delivered Easter baskets to members of our R-U-OKAY Program today, spreading a little joy and reminding them that they are valued and cared for. 🐣💛

The R-U-Okay Program is a community outreach initiative designed to support elderly individuals and residents who live alone or do not have nearby family support. The program is operated by the Belhaven Police Department and is intended to promote safety, independence, and peace of mind through daily wellness checks.

Participants in the program receive a scheduled phone call each day at a predetermined time. During this call, they simply confirm that they are safe and well. If the participant answers and indicates everything is okay, no further action is taken.

However, if the call goes unanswered after multiple attempts, we follow a structured response. The department will first attempt to contact the participant’s designated emergency contact. If we are still unable to make contact, officers will respond to the residence to conduct a welfare check and ensure their safety.

When enrolling a loved one, family members provide important information such as health history and any details that may assist officers in properly caring for and responding to the individual’s needs. This program helps quickly identify emergencies such as medical issues, falls, or other situations where someone may not be able to call for help on their own.

The R-U-OKAY Program provides an added layer of security and peace of mind for both participants and their families, especially those living out of town or in another state. It also strengthens community relationships by ensuring we are proactively looking out for those who may be more vulnerable. 💙
