The last time the 300th Army Band supported this parade was in 2019 and it felt great to be back and supporting the local veterans who have served. This included World War II veteran Burt Spivack, as well as members of the Tuskegee Airmen, and Vietnam War veterans.

Gold Star Mother's Day:

During World War 1 it became tradition to place banners outside the home of service members. A blue star represented a service member currently serving in the war while a gold star represented those who gave their all in service to our country.

Gold Star Mother’s Day is observed every year on the last Sunday of September.

Taps has sounded for 13 Service Members in the weeks following the events in Afghanistan, and 13 mothers and families have become Gold Star Families. The service and sacrifice of the fallen and their families is a debt that can never be repaid, but that can be honored through our thanks and sorrows of those who have sacrificed much.

Passed in 1973, the U.S. Congress designated August 26th as “Women’s Equality Day.” The date was selected to commemorate the 1920 certification of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, granting women the right to vote. This was the culmination of a massive, peaceful civil rights movement by women that had its formal beginnings in 1848 at the world’s first women’s rights convention, in Seneca Falls, New York. The observance of Women’s Equality Day not only commemorates the passage of the 19th Amendment, but also calls attention to women’s continuing efforts toward full equality.

Infinity Winds had the pleasure of showcasing their musical talents in a community outreach mission. Students of Pasadena and Warren High Schools were treated to concerts while being provided the opportunity to learn more about the role of the 300th Army Band as the local face of the U.S. Army and keepers of military music and tradition. Students also learned more about the hard work and dedication required to become a musician of the "Hollywood's Own".

Today is National Buffalo Soldier Day, a day commemorating the formation of the first regular Army regiments comprising African American Soldiers.

In 1866, following the American Civil War, Congress passed the Army Organization Act which allowed for the creation of six African American cavalry and infantry regiments. These six regiments would eventually consolidate into the 9th/10th Cavalry and the 24th/25th Infantry. Their initial mission was to protect the government assets in the ever-growing Western Frontier where the term Buffalo Soldier would be coined by the Native Americans they encountered. In their 78 years of service, from 1866 – 1944, there would be 23 Medal of Honor recipients amongst the Buffalo Soldiers.

Today we pause to remember all of the brave men and women who have selflessly given their last full measure of devotion in service to our country. Because of their sacrifices, we enjoy the freedoms that we have today.

Soldier Spotlight:

Sergeant Jonathan Wang

SGT Wang currently resides in Monterey Park, CA. He serves as a Clarinet instrumentalist, and as an Admin and Library clerk.

SGT Wang currently works as the Military Funeral Honors Area Coordinator for Southern California. Outside of work, he enjoys board games as well as many PC games, watching animal related videos on YouTube, and fancies himself a connoisseur of good food.

SGT Wang joined the 300th Army Band to utilize a skill set he possessed in service to his country with the Army Reserve. His favorite thing about the 300th Army Band is that it provides a friendly, supportive environment that is like a second family to him. A notable experience he recalls is “playing a promotion ceremony right after taking the ACFT.”

Originating in the 1860′s with the Mexican-American communities of California, Cinco de Mayo is a holiday that celebrates the date of the Mexican army’s May 5, 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War. This day is also known as Battle of Puebla Day. It began to commemorate the cause of freedom and democracy and has evolved into a commemoration of Mexican culture and heritage. Today, in the United States, Cinco de Mayo is observed annually on May 5 as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride. Let us know your favorite recipes in the comments!

Last month one of the 300th’s own, SPC Aaron Montalvo, recently returned to us upon completion of Basic training, and Advanced Individual Training (AIT) at the Army School of Music. Entry level training prepares a Soldier for the rigors of Army life, and further develops their performance skills to better serve as an Army Musician.

Additionally, he had the opportunity to perform his first ceremony with the band on April 11th.

Congratulations on the first step of your Army career, and a job well done on your first performance!

Soldier Spotlight:

Specialist Phillip Beck

SPC Beck currently resides in Palmdale, CA. He serves as a Trumpet instrumentalist in concert band, and ceremonial band. He also works as a member of our Public Affairs Shop.

As a civilian, SPC Beck works as a music stock clerk for a local school district. Outside of work, he enjoys performing on the trumpet, and continually maintaining his craft despite the pandemic.

SPC Beck initially joined the reserves in December 2011 with the 191st Army Band before transferring to the 300th Army Band. His favorite thing about the 300th Army Band is that “it is a more inclusive way to be a professional musician and, unlike some civilian counterparts, our performances are free for the public to enjoy.”
