⚡ Generator Safety Tips ⚡

When the power goes out, generators can be lifesavers… but only if they’re used safely!

✅ ALWAYS place generators OUTSIDE
✅ Keep them at least 20 feet away from doors/windows
✅ Use heavy-duty extension cords rated for outdoor use
✅ Let generators cool before refueling
✅ Install battery-powered carbon monoxide alarms

🚫 NEVER run a generator in:
❌ Garages
❌ Screen rooms
❌ Sheds
❌ “Just inside the door for a minute”

Carbon monoxide is invisible, odorless, and dangerous.

And remember, Gilchrist County… if your extension cords look like spaghetti fighting a lawn mower, it might be time for an upgrade. 😅

Stay safe and stay powered responsibly! 💙

✅ Review your emergency plans
✅ Stock up on supplies
✅ Check generators and batteries
✅ Don’t forget your pets!

🌀 Gilchrist County Prepares for the 2026 Hurricane Season 🌀

Gilchrist County Emergency Management recently hosted Gilchrist County Departments, the Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM), Synergy, the Gilchrist County Sheriff’s Office, the City of Fanning Springs, CFEC, Duke Energy, and other community partners for the 2026 Hurricane Kick-Off Meeting.

This meeting plays a critical role in ensuring all departments and agencies are prepared, coordinated, and ready to respond during the upcoming hurricane season. Effective emergency preparedness requires strong collaboration between local governments, public safety agencies, utilities, community partners, and the State of Florida.

We appreciate the participation and continued partnership of everyone involved as we work together to keep Gilchrist County prepared and resilient this hurricane season.

Hurricane Season is here — now is the time to prepare. If you haven’t already, sign up for Alert Gilchrist to receive important emergency alerts and notifications directly to your phone or email:

🌀 MYTH vs. FACT: Hurricane Preparedness Edition 🌀

❌ MYTH: “If the storm weakens before landfall, we’re in the clear.”
✅ FACT: Tropical systems can still dump tons of rain, knock out power, and toss lawn furniture into the next county.

❌ MYTH: “Tape on windows keeps them from breaking.”
✅ FACT: Tape mostly just gives you taped-up broken glass. Storm shutters are the safer choice.

❌ MYTH: “I’ll just wait until the day before to get supplies.”
✅ FACT: That’s how you end up eating Vienna sausages by candlelight because the bread aisle looked like Black Friday.

❌ MYTH: “Generators are safe in the garage if the door is cracked.”
✅ FACT: Carbon monoxide doesn’t care about cracked doors. Always run generators OUTSIDE and away from your home.

Preparedness isn’t panic — it’s peace of mind. 💙

🔥🌧️ GILCHRIST COUNTY DROUGHT & WILDFIRE UPDATE 🌧️🔥
Mother Nature is playing that fun Florida game again called:

“Will it rain… or will everything catch on fire?” 🤠
While parts of Florida finally got some much-needed rain, drought conditions are STILL hanging around North Florida like that one mosquito that refuses to die.

🚨 Current concerns:
• Dry conditions continue across much of North Florida
• Wildfire danger remains elevated
• Gusty winds + lightning storms can spark new fires
• Smoke from nearby fires can impact air quality
• Long-term drought conditions are still affecting soil, crops, and waterways

There are currently 45 wildfires burning statewide with over 17,000 acres impacted. One of the larger fires is right here in our region in Levy County.

🌲 Gilchrist County Emergency Management asks everyone to:
✅ Avoid outdoor burning
✅ Properly discard ci******es
✅ Don’t park hot vehicles in dry grass
✅ Keep water handy if operating equipment outdoors
✅ Pray for rain…

Remember:
Florida weather can go from “dust bowl” to “Noah’s Ark” in about 17 minutes.

Stay alert, stay hydrated, and help prevent wildfires.

🌀 Hurricane Preparedness Checklist 🌀

Y’all know hurricane season in Florida is like sweet tea at a church picnic… it’s guaranteed. Now’s the time to check those emergency kits before the wind starts doing backflips in the backyard. 🌴💨

✅ Water & non-perishable food
✅ Flashlights & batteries
✅ Medications
✅ Phone chargers
✅ Pet supplies
✅ Important documents
✅ Generator fuel (for the folks running half the county during outages 😅)

And remember… if your hurricane plan is “I’ll just wing it,” that’s exactly what the storm will do too.

Take a few minutes this week to prepare now so you’re not fighting over the last loaf of bread and pack of batteries later. Stay safe, Gilchrist County! 💙

📣 Day 7: Ride It Out Safely

When the storm hits:
🏠 STAY INSIDE. STAY PUT.
Just because it gets quiet doesn’t mean it’s over—that’s not the universe giving you a break to “go check it out.”

After the storm:
⚠️ Watch for floodwaters, power lines, and critters that are just as confused as you are.

🚫 Turn Around, Don’t Drown
🚫 Don’t play electrician
🚫 Generators stay OUTSIDE (we like y’all breathing)

Stay safe before, during, AND after, Gilchrist County.

We made it through another week of prep—now keep it going! 💪

📣 Day 6: Evacuate Smart

If you have to evacuate, you don’t need to drive to Canada.

🚗 TENS OF MILES, NOT HUNDREDS
✔️ Go inland or to a nearby safe location
✔️ Know where you’re going ahead of time

Most folks just need to go a short distance—not start a cross-country road trip.

Plan ahead so you’re not stuck in traffic wondering why you packed your entire garage.

Keep it simple, Gilchrist.
