Flag Day in old Clearwater ~ Flag Day is a day set aside to honor the national flag of the United States.
It commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States on June 14, 1777, by resolution of the Second Continental Congress.
The text of the resolution reads, "that the flag of the United States shall be of thirteen stripes of alternate red and white, with a union of thirteen stars of white in a blue field, representing the new constellation."
Although it's been through many iterations over the past two centuries, the symbolism has not changed. Each star on the canton represents a U.S. state. The 13 stripes represent the thirteen British colonies that declared independence from Great Britain, and became the first states in the U.S.
The colors on the flag each have a specific meaning:
Red: Valor and Bravery
White: Purity and Innocence
Blue: Vigilance, Perseverance, and Justice
On August 3, 1949, President Harry S. Truman signed a bill into law that declared June 14th as Flag Day.
Nicknames for the flag include the Stars and Stripes, Old Glory, and the Star-Spangled Banner.
