This was the scene early this morning in the 400 block of East Shore Drive on Clearwater Beach when firefighters arrived. A fire broke out at an abandoned two-story motel about 3:45 a.m.; thankfully, no injuries were reported. The cause is under investigation.

Officers were able to nab this suspect after a seriously-slow-speed pursuit over the weekend. Taken into custody near Drew Street and Duncan Avenue, he weighed about 50 pounds. He was taken to a local veterinarian to be checked out.

Former Clearwater Police Chief Daniel Slaughter was inducted this morning into the Florida Law Enforcement Officers Hall of Fame in Tallahassee.

Chief Slaughter, who is now an assistant city manager with the city of Clearwater, was chief from 2014 through 2023. He retired in 2023 after a 30-year career with the Clearwater Police Department.

He was one of five inductees honored today for their contributions to law enforcement. The others were Larry Corbin, Michael “Mick” McHale, Osie Lawton (O.L.) Raulerson Jr. and J. Harrell Reid.

A Fort Myers man was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon after deliberately ramming his car into a police vehicle early this morning.

Garrett Burr (DOB 4-4-1998) was booked in to the Pinellas County Jail after the intentional crash, which occurred around midnight on Gulf-to-Bay Boulevard just west of U.S. 19.

The officer was sitting at a red light in his marked Ford F-150 when Garrett accelerated and struck the vehicle on purpose. The officer was taken to Morton Plant Hospital, where he was treated and later released for minor injuries.

Garrett, who was driving a 2025 Kia Soul, told officers he intentionally struck the officer’s vehicle. He did not say why and declined to speak further with officers.

Congratulations to three of our personnel who recently graduated from a groundbreaking mental health program at St. Petersburg College. Sgt. Corey Lenczden, Sgt. Lenshawn Price and Officer Jacob Walser were among the 14 law enforcement graduates in the third installment of the Sun Coast Police Benevolent Association Applied Mental Health Advanced Technical Certificate for First Responders program. The curriculum prepares law enforcement professionals to serve as mental health liaisons within their agencies and strengthen peer support systems.

This morning, we recognized Theresa Harmon, a Clearwater woman, with the Samaritan Award for her role in keeping an elderly man from becoming a victim of fraud. In April of this year at the Dollar Tree Store where she works, the man came in seeking to buy two $250 gift cards. He was on the phone and appeared to be taking directions from someone. Harmon grew suspicious and asked the man if he was being scammed. At first he said no, but then he said something about getting a phone call from Publishers Clearing House Sweepstakes. She told him to hang up the phone and then she called police. Thanks to her involvement, the man was not scammed out of his money. We are thankful she got involved and saved him from becoming a victim.
