Press Release - New Program for Autisim Awareness!🧩

The LEAAP program is about creating a tool for first responders that could help them communicate more effectively and safely during a crisis or emergency situations.

If an autistic child or adult were involved in a car accident or emergency situation, they could suddenly find themselves surrounded by flashing lights, loud noises, strangers approaching them, touching them, and giving instructions they may not understand. Knowing ahead of time that someone in a home or vehicle may be nonverbal and may be sensitive to sensory overload could completely change how deputies and emergency personnel approach the situation.

Participation in this program is voluntary. Families choose whether they want to provide information because they believe it could help protect their loved one during an emergency.

For those of us who love someone with autism, especially someone who is nonverbal, anything that helps first responders better understand and assist them in a moment of crisis is worth considering. This program is about safety, understanding, and giving our loved ones the best chance at a positive interaction when they may not be able to advocate for themselves.
