Today Khalessi and Tupac are having to find their food!
This puzzle feeder enrichment challenges the guinea pigs to find their food as if they are foraging in the wild! Every piece of enrichment is species specific and also has to be approved. Every aspect of the enrichment must be tested before given to the animals. This allows us to know if is going to be too challenging for them, and if the animals will chew on things they shouldn't.
Whats the favorite piece of enrichment you have seen us or a zoo do before? 🐻🐯🐢🐙🐳
Izel our Nelson’s Milk Snake catching some sun rays today!

Our life as a nature center🌷
We are more than just a 4 acre park. We are small but mighty! Each year we structure hundreds of programs to educate and inspire a life long curiosity of nature. People of all ages witness the beauty and abundance of biodiversity in our park. This summer we challenge you to get outside more and explore the wonders of nature! 🌲🌻☀️☁️
On this day in 1985, Russ Pitman Park (formerly the Henshaw Estate) was officially dedicated to the City of Bellaire by the Friends of Bellaire Parks, and a ribbon cutting ceremony was held celebrating Bellaire's new nature park. The park is looking great at 39 years old and is still serving it's intended purpose as a place where people can connect with nature every day!

Blossom thinks blackberries and bananas are lip smacking good! (Forgive us. We're like new parents over here and may overshare pictures and videos of our new arrival. 😉 )
Volunteers have been counting record numbers of Chimney Swifts entering our South tower (by the nature playground and South parking lot) at dusk this week. Numbers have ranged from the 140's to 170's. The previous record was 148 many years ago. Betsy Black, an NDC volunteer, shot this video earlier this week. You are welcome to stop by around dusk to watch the Swifts. Bring a folding chair if you'd like. No binoculars are necessary. They are just over head! There is no guarantee they will be back in such large numbers again tonight. They could migrate at any time. Mary Ann will be there watching and counting if you want to join her. She just asks that you stay fairly quiet and still as they come in close to enter the tower.
Sunny is out enjoying playing in a puddle! How are you enjoying the outdoors today?
Feeding Time for Henry the Tenrec
Feeding time for Henry the Tenrec, a nocturnal mammal from Madagascar. Tonight he dined on superworms. Skip ahead to about 1 minute to see him emerge from his hide. Before that he is just grooming in hiding. At about 2 min in he is getting more serious about finding food. For more action jump closer to 2 min 30 seconds. Eventually, you will see him in two feeding bouts. Notice what he does after catching his prey. And if you listen carefully, you can hear how noisily he eats! I did not speak during the video because I did not want to spook him.
Lunchtime for our education animals!
It’s lunchtime for our education animals!
I sent Bailey on a walk to the pond to see if there were any toads calling this morning. It is raining here in Katy now and I thought maybe it was raining there and the toads would be out calling to each other and creating a ruckus. Bailey didn't find a chorus of toads, but you can watch this short video and take a walk to the pond with her.
Happy Go Texan Day! The trail riders just made their way down Newcastle past the park. Here's a snippet of some of the riders.
