Still contemplating what the next move will be regarding dogs in the park! In the meantime there are other issues regarding access and egress from the park near City Hall!

The latest controversy is whether or not to allow dogs in the city parks. I spoke in favor of allowing dogs in the city parks provided that they are on a leash, they have an updated rabies shot, and that owners pick up after their dogs!

Some parks have the additional requirement that dogs should not be allowed near the playground areas; I do not have a problem with this.

Three people spoke at City Council last Monday evening, May 15. Two spoke in favor of allowing dogs (and were dog owners,) and one spoke against dogs in parks. He did not say whether or not he owned a dog.

Stay tuned for further developments on this issue!

I have noticed that my neighbors on my block have a lot of Recycling to put out every Wednesday. Many households have up to three bins full of paper and cardboard, etc. yet on trash days (twice a week) there is hardly any garbage in the black bags. Some people on my block only put out garbage once a week.
How about you? Have you noticed this trend in your neighborhood as well?
Please let me know!

My latest project is to get #Tiny Little Libraries in Bellaire. West University is planning to install six Tiny Libraries this year. I visited the tiny library in Colonial Park at Thanksgiving and took two books and donated two books. Simple!

While driving home from Galveston this week I noticed a billboard with a picture of Bill King, candidate for Mayor of Houston. The words on the billboard said "You had me at Fix the Streets."

11/27/2015

I had a meeting with David Montegue this week. We discussed changes I would like to see made in Bellaire--including Crisis Intervention Training for Police Officers and better customer service when citizens call in to report a dangerous situation. i.e. a tree branch covering a stop sign.

11/20/2015

I will be meeting with one of the newly elected Council Members on Monday to discuss my concerns about the Bellaire Police and the Crisis Intervention Training that is available for free to all policemen in Harris County. It is a 40 hour course provided by Harris County in conjunction with NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

The people have spoken. I had 994 votes; my opponent had more. Thank you so much to all of my friends and supporters!

My friend and City Council member Roman Reed informed me that on June 20 the new Bellaire Police Chief will hold a public forum at Bellaire City Hall. The Police Chief would like to hear from citizens and educate citizens about the Police Department. I plan to be at the meeting. It will last from 6:30 to 7:30. Please join me there.

Don't know yet if I will run again for City Council, but until I make that decision I will continue to keep my mouth open.
My number one concern is about the CIT Training for the Bellaire Police Department. Crisis Intervention Training was developed over ten years ago in an effort to train police to work with citizens with mental illness. Currently the City of Houston Police Dept. is offering a 40 hour continuing education course free of charge to any police officer in the county, state or country. The Houston Police Academy offers 8 hours of CIT training to all of the cadets before graduation, but this is an additional 40 hours of training.
As a mother and as a citizen of Bellaire, I know I would rest easier at night knowing the police are well trained in this area.

My latest project is to assist Starbucks in Bellaire with their recycling efforts. I was told by an employee at Starbucks that they are not currently recycling. However, he told me that there is a Starbucks in Austin which recycles. I have made inquiries with two Bellaire City Council members about assisting Starbucks in their desire to recycle. We will see where this goes. In the meantime, please let me know of any Starbucks that are currently recycling. Apparently, the decision to recycle is up to each individual manager.

I spoke to the City Council on Monday evening, March 5. The topic was Crisis Intervention Training for the Bellaire Police Force. This is a 40 hour free course offered by the Houston Police Department. The course is specifically designed for police who are called to a crisis situation involving a person with mental illness.
I hope the Bellaire City Council will follow up with this opportunity. It would certainly improve the public safety and the public confidence in the police force here in Bellaire.

I am continuing to 'keep my mouth open' by speaking up at City Council Meetings. I would like to raise awareness of the Farmers' Market that meets on Friday evenings from 4-7 in the parking lot of Houston Community Center on Loop 610 at Fournace. We are very lucky to have the opportunity to support the local farmers by purchasing fresh fruits and vegetables. There are also a few vendors who sell prepared food at the Farmers' Market in Bellaire. Check it out.

I am so grateful to live in Bellaire. I have wonderful neighbors on my cul-de-sac who are helpful in watching out for all of the homes and families on our block. My oldest neighbors are in their late 80s and my youngest neighbor is 4 years old.
I really love the fact that so many people in Bellaire want to volunteer in some way to make our city better. There are many boards and committees where one can participate. Last night I looked through the Little League yearbook and saw pictures of both my children and their teammates. There are an incredible number of volunteers who work to keep that organization going. Thank you to all of you--past, present, and future.

I spoke last night at the Bellaire City Council. I asked the Council/City Manager to please fix the doors leading into City Hall. They have been unusable for several months. I was told that 'they' were waiting for rain before they would fix the doors. Apparently the drought had something to do with the problem.
During the meeting the City Manager reported that the foundation under City Hall would be leveled on Dec. 2, and the doors would be fixed at that time. Boy, it sure is nice to get such a quick response!! Thank you!

Today's the day for the Election!! My husband Phillip put out signs this morning at all of the polling places. What a guy!! My son David and I spent the day at the Trotter YMCA selling beautiful bird feeders and Bellaire Chocolates. I had a few political postcards on my table, and I spoke to a few people about why I am running for City Council in Bellaire. Thank you to all who voted for me.

Your opinions matter to me. Let me know how you think we can make Bellaire an even better place to live.
