LCBDD recently welcomed Erica Wallace, Children and Families Advisor with the Ohio Association of County Boards of DD, who met with our Early Intervention Director, Liz Rose; Speech Therapist, Susan Jones; and Superintendent, Krista Oldiges.

The group discussed LCBDD’s Early Intervention program and funding challenges following the recent levy defeat. Erica also toured the LCBDD and Discovery Center facilities and learned more about the history of developmental disability services in Logan County.

Our Early Intervention Team provides support to children birth through age 3 who reside in Logan County, including:
👶 Service Coordination
🌱 Developmental Specialist Services
💪 Physical Therapy
🧩 Occupational Therapy
💬 Speech Therapy

Early Intervention helps families understand their child’s development, connect with resources, and access services that can support their child’s growth during these important early years.

🌈 Growing Beyond Discovery 🌈

This week, we are excited to share the story of Phoebe and how her journey at The Discovery Center Preschool helped her grow and thrive!

Phoebe attended The Discovery Center Preschool and had Miss Emily as her teacher. Her mom, Jessica, shared how much Discovery Center has meant to their family:

"I can't explain how much I love Discovery Center. They helped our family so much. Lisa was always a great help as well."

Now 7 years old, Phoebe is getting ready to start second grade at Bellefontaine City Schools! She stays busy playing softball six months out of the year, where she is a catcher. She also loves swimming and reading a book to her mom every night.

Phoebe is known for her friendly personality and loves talking to everyone she meets. Her family believes the confidence and communication skills she developed at Discovery Center helped her become the outgoing and caring person she is today.

"They taught us a lot as a family and her as well. We will always be a Discovery Center family!"

Stories like Phoebe's remind us why early childhood education and the connections made at The Discovery Center Preschool can make such a lasting impact.

A new school year is almost here! As students head back to the classroom, it is important to remember that everyone communicates in different ways.

To help make school days more inclusive, we are sharing school-themed communication boards in English and Spanish that can be used at home, in the classroom, on the bus, or throughout the school day. Communication boards can give students another way to express their needs, make choices, participate in activities, and connect with the people around them.

Whether a student uses words, gestures, signs, an AAC device, or a communication board—every form of communication matters.

Special Olympics Athlete of the Month for August is Sara Stierhoff! Sara is an all-around athlete who participates in Cheer, Track, and Softball. But her impact goes far beyond the playing field! As an Athlete Leader, Sara helped secure a grant to resurface a local playground, making it more accessible for all children in her community.

Sara also volunteers at Ben Logan School and takes part in many other volunteer opportunities throughout the year. She serves as the Secretary for the Logan County Kiwanis Aktion Club, continuing to show her commitment to leadership and community service.

We are proud of Sara and the leadership she shares with fellow athletes and her community. Congratulations, Sara!
