FYI! In the area of the GIANT Plaza Center off of Benner Pike.

June 4, 2026

The Bellefonte Fire Department will be using the structure at 116 Paradise Road in Benner Township for fire department training. The training will take place Saturday, 6/6 from 8 AM until 4 PM.

The training involves systematically lighting fires in the structure and extinguishing them using fire department personnel. This training is extremely beneficial for firefighters and better prepares them for when structural fires do occur. Fire and smoke will be visible at the address and around the area throughout the day.

A portion of Paradise Road will be restricted to one lane, beginning at 7 AM due to the placement of fire apparatus for the exercise. Fire Police personnel will be on site to assist with directing traffic in the area of the lane closure. Please use caution if you are navigating the area.

The training is being conducted under the supervision of Instructors from the Pennsylvania State Fire Academy. All appropriate permits and permissions have been secured.

The Bellefonte Fire Department appreciates your understanding and continued support!

LAW ENFORCEMENT UPDATE:
Paul Miller’s Law Full Enforcement Begins Tonight
Starting tonight at 12:00 a.m. (Friday, June 5), the Bellefonte Borough Police Department will begin full enforcement of Paul Miller’s Law (Pennsylvania’s Distracted Driving/Hands-Free Law).
While the law officially took effect last year, Pennsylvania implemented a 1-year educational grace period where officers only issued written warnings. Tonight, that grace period ends. Moving forward, keeping our community safe means actively ticketing drivers who choose to drive distracted.
What you need to know to stay compliant in Pennsylvania:
No Handheld Use: It is a primary offense to hold or support any interactive mobile device (phone, tablet, smart device) with any part of your body while driving. Officers can pull you over solely for having a phone in your hand. Red Lights Count: The law applies even when you are temporarily stopped at a red light, stop sign, or sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic.
What’s Banned: Dialing, texting, emailing, browsing the internet, scrolling social media, or watching/recording videos while behind the wheel.
The Penalty: Violators face a 200 once court costs and administrative fees are added.
What IS allowed:
Using hands-free technology (Bluetooth, speakerphone, steering wheel controls, or voice commands).
Making a single tap or swipe to activate a feature on a device that is securely mounted to your dash or windshield.
Making an emergency call to 911 or emergency services.
Using your device only after you have safely pulled over and parked in a designated safe location off the roadway.
This law is named in memory of Paul Miller Jr., who tragically lost his life in a crash caused by a distracted driver. Our goal isn't to hand out tickets—it’s to prevent preventable tragedies and ensure everyone on Bellefonte’s roads gets home safely.
Put the phone down, stay hands-free, and keep your eyes on the road.

In honor of EMS week, here is some history about the symbol commonly seen on EMS personnel, ambulances, and objects associated with emergency medicine.

** Star of Life history **

The Star of Life is a blue, six-barred star featuring the Rod of Asclepius (an ancient symbol of medicine), created in 1973 by Leo R. Schwartz for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to identify certified Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel and vehicles. It replaced the orange cross to avoid conflict with the American Red Cross and was officially patented on February 1, 1977.

Six branches of the star:

1. Detection: The first rescuers on the scene, usually untrained civilians or those involved in the incident, observe the scene, understand the problem, identify the dangers to themselves and others, and take appropriate measures to ensure their safety on the scene (environmental, electricity, chemicals, radiation, etc.).

2. Reporting: The call for professional help is made and dispatch is connected with the victims, providing emergency medical dispatch.

3. Response: The first rescuers provide first aid and immediate care to the extent of their capabilities.

4. On scene care: The EMS personnel arrive and provide immediate care to the extent of their capabilities on-scene.

5. Care in transit: The EMS personnel proceed to transfer the patient to a hospital via an ambulance or helicopter for specialized care. They provide medical care during the transportation.

6. Transfer to definitive care: Appropriate specialized care is provided at the hospital.
