Thoughts:
I thought the girls played really tough against a good opponent in Bishop Guilfoyle. I was impressed with not only the back 4 tonight, but the entire team played hard defense. Cami Walker made some excellent saves in goal tonight.

Tuesday, the Bellefonte girls had their turn to go up against Philipsburg-Osceola in Laurel Highlands soccer action.
Monday, the boys team topped the Mounties 10-1.
The Red Raiders would also show their strengths topping PO 13-0 in a Mercy Rule contest.
Leading the offense was Sydney Miller with a hat trick-plus one, finishing with four goals.
Teammates Claire Halterman, Nora Davis and Reese Patterson all finished with two goals each.
Others finishing with a goal were Emily Culley, Sydney Higginbotham and Kaitlyn Gutierrez to round out the Bellefonte scoring.

A new PSU era kicks off

Penn State opens its 140th football season on Saturday afternoon when the No. 18/17 Nittany Lions host Marshall at West Shore Home Field at Beaver Stadium. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. on FS1, and the program will stage its 11th Stripe Out, a tradition that has become one of the most visually striking home atmospheres in college football.

The matchup marks just the third meeting between the two programs and the first since 1930. Penn State won the 1929 contest 26–7 and followed with a 65–0 victory the next year, a reminder of how long it has been since the Thundering Herd last visited Happy Valley.

More importantly, the game marks the official beginning of the Matt Campbell era. Campbell arrives after a decade at Iowa State, where he became the winningest coach in Cyclone history with a 72–55 record and a 56.7 percent winning mark. Across 14 seasons as a head coach, he has posted winning records 12 times, a level of consistency Penn State hopes will translate immediately.

Historically, Nittany Lion head coaches have fared well in their debuts, going 1141, and Campbell inherits a roster that has been aggressively rebuilt for 2026.

No position reflects that overhaul more than quarterback, where redshirt senior Rocco Becht brings a level of experience few programs can match. Becht, on four major preseason award watch lists, made 39 starts at Iowa State and led the Cyclones to 26 wins. Entering the season, he ranks among the top active FBS quarterbacks in nearly every major statistical category: first in wins as a starter (26), tied for first in 200yard passing games (29), second in passing yards (9,274), third in passing touchdowns (64), third in total offense (9,773), fourth in completions (714) and attempts (1,177), fifth in completion percentage (60.7, minimum 1,000 attempts), and seventh in rushing touchdowns (19). For a program that has often entered seasons with uncertainty under center, Becht’s résumé provides a stabilizing force.

Defensively, Penn State is reloaded and experienced. The unit has combined for 631 games played and 207 starts, giving coordinator Tom Allen a veteran foundation. Linebacker Tony Rojas headlines the group, appearing on watch lists for the Comeback Player of the Year, Hispanic College Football Player of the Year, and the Lott IMPACT Trophy. Safety Jeremiah Cooper (Bednarik, Comeback POY), linebacker Kooper Ebel (Butkus), defensive end Max Granville (Comeback POY), and defensive tackle Siale Taupaki (Polynesian College POY) join him among the 15 Nittany Lions recognized on preseason lists.

Marshall arrives after a 5–7 season in 2025, but the Herd bring playmakers capable of stressing Penn State early. Quarterback Carlos Del RioWilson threw for 2,043 yards and 17 touchdowns while adding 660 rushing yards and six scores, giving Marshall a dualthreat leader. Cornerback Boogie Trotter, who posted 74 tackles and five interceptions last season, anchors a defense that has shown the ability to create turnovers.

Penn State added a record 62 newcomers, including 40 transfers who have combined for 337 collegiate starts. With a manageable opener, a veteran quarterback, and a defense built on experience, the Campbell era begins with both anticipation and expectation. The Stripe Out will set the stage.

What ensues will begin to reveal what Penn State can become as they kick off Saturday against Marshall at 3:30 p.m.

BELLEFONTE - Mother Nature made her official arrival Monday night as Thunder and lightning storms rolled through Bellefonte delaying the home opener for the Bellefonte boys soccer team as they hosted Philipsburg-Osceola.
After the hour delay, it would be the Red Raiders that would rumble through the Mounties defense en route to a 10-1 victory.
The Red Raiders outshot the Mounties 21-7. They also led on corner opportunities by a 6-1 advantage.
“I think the rain delay helped us. They were really hungry to get out and start playing. They were ready to play. And then with the rain delay yet, I mean, they were just like a bunch of caged animals, they were ready to go and came out, I think, we had 2 goals in like the 1st 2 or 3 minutes there,” said Bellefonte coach Scott Martz. “That set the pace and set the tone for them. But it was nice to see multiple guys score tonight, too.”
After missing last season, Seth Caton was back as he finished the night with a hat trick.
“Seth came back, is his first time back from an injury, he didn't get to play last year for us,” said Martz.�“He had three goals tonight. So it was nice to get him back in the swing again.”
Bellefonte’s offense was alive and well in the first 10 minutes.
Caton led off the game as he stood staring down Mounties goalie Jonathan Thompson for a penalty kick attempt. Caton sent it past Thompson for the first Red Raiders goal.
Teammate Cole Stabinger plastered a second goal just minutes later on an unassisted blast at 35:33.
Before Philipsburg-Osceola could settle in Bellefonte got back on the scoreboard. Again Caton blasted a shot at the 30:25 mark for his second goal.
The goals and the momentum continued as Bellefonte was back on the scoreboard less than two minutes later. Keegan Timblin plastered an unassisted at 28:52, making it a 4-0 contest.
Defensively, Bellefonte used its relentless offense to keep the ball from crossing midfield for much of the first half.
At 26:31 Jamin Ondraski added yet another goal to keep the home team crowd cheering.
Both defenses kept the game quiet until the game fell under the 10-minute mark.
Wesley Cook upped the Red Raiders lead as he scored via a Stabinger assist at 7:53.
Caton posted his hat trick on the last goal of the half as he blasted yet another unassisted. This time it was at the 6:45 mark.
In the second half, the Red Raiders continued where it left off posting three more goals.
With nothing but pride on the line, the Mounties were able to end the shut out as Damian Vaughn’s unassisted goal at 13:00 ended it.
Rounding out the scoring was Bellefonte’s Paxton Breon as he hit on an unassisted goal at 3:00.�“I told the guys at halftime, I said, starters are going to start, so let's work for one more goal, then I gotta get you guys out, 'cause we do have two more games,” said Martz. The subs came in and did an awesome job in there for us tonight. Again, we had a lot of freshmen that were out there tonight, and they played good minutes for us tonight.”�Next for Bellefonte is Penns Valley on Wednesday.
