Take Two - Oct 21

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” - Isaiah 41:10

Today is the funeral mass for Father Patrick O’Doherty. I called him the Prophet. Another appropriate title would be healer. Better yet Pastor. That is who he was for nearly 40 years at Queen of Peace. His gift, his talent was his presence. He was always there for the people. People flocked to him. He touched thousands of lives. He touched mine. He was not my friend. He was my father. I don’t use that title lightly. I turned to him in my struggles, anxieties, confusion and joys and blessings. I will miss him greatly.

I googled “scripture for funeral” and this verse was one of my options. At first glance it doesn’t sound very funeralish. Upon reflection, I think God is speaking to me. Though my mentor is no longer with me, God promises to be with me. I am not to fear. Believe me, I was or am. We have all gone through terrible losses in our life. The prophet Isaiah speaks to you as well. Do not fear. God promises to be with you. As you reflect his morning, what fears are badgering you? Bring them to God. Cast aside fear. God is with you.

Take Two - Oct 20

“A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.” - Proverbs 18:24

Today at Queen of Peace, we are celebrating the wake service for Father O’Doherty. I have the privilege and honor of leading the service. He was not my friend. He was more than that. He was to me, my father. He was the one I could turn to. I told him everything. He helped calm my anxieties, my fears, and worries. He was my spiritual guide. I called him the Prophet. I am not sure how much help I was to him. I like to think that I was of some help. He lived only for Jesus and his people. He was not one to express his feelings. He died to himself and lived only for the Lord. Yet, before his death he did tell me “You have done a lot for me.” I treasure those words. I hope I was. For he did so much for me. I miss him terribly.

As you pray, thank God for those special people in your life. They are God’s gifts to us. Be a blessing to someone. Give it to yourself, one person at a time. Please say a prayer for Father O’Doherty.
