I wish I was able to hobnob with the bishop. I can’t. Too intimidated, even at my age. I watch other priests and they are quite comfortable. I used to be envious of them. I probably still am, but not nearly as much. If you receive a title or chosen to be on a select committee better yet. There is a certain status that comes with that. Of course, this does not apply to most priests but some…

Paul encourages us to associate with the ordinary, the overlooked and the insignificant. You have the opportunity to do the same. Check yourself on your desire to be important even in your small world. Remember, Jesus was quite at home with them. Are you?

In your quiet time examine yourself on your desire to be special. Ask for the grace to seek out those who are often overlooked. Remind yourself that you are in good company, Jesus’ social circle.

Take Two - Aug 30

“Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep.” - Romans 12:15

Share in another’s joys and sorrows. You may not be particularly upbeat on that particular day and may not have the energy to rejoice. Rejoice anyway, as best as you are able. If nothing else, don’t diminish the good sensation. Life is not about you. When you participate in the recipient’s good fortune, you increase their joy. In those times when someone is struggling with emotional pain, be mindful of their pain. Tone it down. Be respectful. Be empathetic. If that is not possible, do no harm. Even your quiet presence can serve as a healing tonic. What Paul is asking us is to live for others. Be mindful of others in the good times and bad. Hopefully, the favor will be returned to you.

Pray for the grace that you can be mindful of others’ moods. Don’t let jealousy ruin someone’s good fortune nor hardness of heart ignore their pain.

Take Two - Aug 29

“Bless those who persecute you, bless and do not curse them.” - Romans 12:14

You got be kidding. I find it hard to be polite when I mistakenly answer the call from a telemarketer. Persecution is not limited to only those who inflict physical pain upon us. It includes those who are rude, nasty, and mean in speech. How tempting it is to respond in kind.

Those moments are the real test of grace. We Christians are not only to refrain from harsh speech, but we are to bless them. We offer such words as “I understand, I am sorry if I… and yes even “God bless.” I think we Christian followers should be the first ones to turn down the volume. Bless and do not curse.

In prayer, examine where you are most likely to respond in a like manner. What or who pushes your button? Pray now for the grace to refrain from a harsh tone and visualize yourself blessing others. (You may have to start by walking away. Build up to gentle speech).
