June is Pet Preparedness Month!

We all hope emergencies never happen, but being prepared can make all the difference for your pets.

Take a few minutes this month to:
✅ Make sure your pet's ID tags and microchip information are up to date
✅ Keep recent photos of your pets on your phone
✅ Have a pet emergency kit with food, medications, leashes, carriers, and important records
✅ Create a plan for where your pets will go in the event of severe weather or an emergency

Our pets depend on us to keep them safe. A little preparation today can provide peace of mind tomorrow.

What is one thing you've done to prepare for your pets in an emergency? Tell us in the comments!

🚨 CODE RED FOR CHAINLINK 🚨
Deadline: Thursday, 06/11/26

Our hearts are breaking as we write this.

Chainlink came to our shelter in July of last year after being found as a stray in East St. Louis. Since then, he has waited patiently for someone to give him the chance he deserves. Unfortunately, that chance has not come, and now Chainlink is out of time.

Despite our staff’s best efforts, Chainlink is struggling in the shelter environment. We have tried medications, enrichment, extra play yard time, walks, and every bit of love we can give him. Nothing is easing the severe kennel anxiety he experiences day after day. The medications are no longer helping, and watching him continue to deteriorate emotionally is heartbreaking.

The hardest part is knowing that we truly believe Chainlink could thrive in a home.

❤️ Chainlink is:

* Dog friendly
* Housebroken
* Great on a leash
* Loves car rides
* Affectionate and eager to be with his people

We believe he would do well with older children or dog-savvy kids who can respect his space and help him decompress as he adjusts to life outside the shelter.

Right now, Chainlink needs a rescue transfer, adopter, or foster placement by Thursday. While we do not have a formal foster program, we are willing to explore every possible option in a last-ditch effort to save him. We simply cannot stand by and watch him continue to suffer in a kennel when we know he may have a completely different future in the right environment.

Every staff member who knows Chainlink is torn. We see glimpses of the dog he could be if given the chance to leave this stressful environment behind. We believe there is still hope for him, but we need help finding it.

Please share Chainlink far and wide. A share could be the one that reaches his person, his foster, or the rescue willing to give him a chance.

📍 St. Clair County Animal Services
📩 Please contact us immediately if you can foster, adopt, or pull Chainlink through rescue.

Chainlink has until Thursday. Let’s not let his story end here💔🐾

Right now, two dogs at our shelter need your help more than ever💔

Kona, an emaciated Great Dane mix, came to us severely underweight and in desperate need of medical care, proper nutrition, and time to heal. Alongside her is Boogie, a sweet puppy who was hit by a car and is now receiving urgent veterinary treatment.

Our municipal shelter works closely with our 501(c)(3) nonprofit, St. Clair County, IL Animal Welfare Advocates, which was created specifically to help cover medical cases like these. Donations made to the nonprofit go directly toward emergency veterinary care, medications, recovery, food, and other lifesaving expenses for animals in our care.

We are also currently in need of canned kitten food for some of the tiniest babies in our care. Any donations of wet kitten food are greatly appreciated and help us continue providing around-the-clock care for vulnerable kittens 🐱

If you would like to help Kona and Boogie, donations can be made directly to our 501(c)(3) or called into Freeburg Animal Hospital PC at 618-539-5400 under the St. Clair County Animal Services account.

No amount is too small, and every share helps us reach more people willing to support these dogs on their road to recovery🐾❤️

Yesterday was a stressful and emotional day for our team as severe storms and the threat of flash flooding forced an emergency relocation of the animals at the St. Clair County Animal Services & Adoption Center. Thanks to quick action, teamwork, and incredible community support, 49 dogs and 20 cats were safely evacuated before conditions worsened.

We are beyond grateful to the organizations that immediately stepped in to help:
🐾 Belleville Area Humane Society for taking in 1 dog, 3 cats, and 9 kittens
🐾 Helping Strays for housing 8 of our dogs along with 7 kittens and 1 cat
🐾 Gateway Pet Guardians for bringing kennels, transporting our fractious cats safely, and helping get everyone settled in for the evening

A huge thank you as well to Hanks Excavating for providing pallets of sandbags to help secure the building, along with the County Public Building Commission and everyone involved in coordinating efforts during the evacuation.

Most importantly, we want to recognize our staff who never hesitated, never backed down, and worked tirelessly to get every animal out safely and efficiently. And to our volunteers, thank you for continuing to show up for these animals time and time again. No matter the circumstance, you never fail us, and yesterday was no exception. Your willingness to jump in, help wherever needed, and support both the animals and staff means more than words can express.

Yesterday was a true example of what can happen when a community comes together for the animals. We are incredibly thankful for every person who stepped up to help.
