The month of May is widely recognized by fans as "Star Wars Month" and Bellingham Public Library Clerk, James, has a fun book recommendation to share in celebration!

"We have a 1976 copy of the Del Rey/ Ballantine books novelization of Star Wars! It is really fun to put your hands on a copy of this book published fifty years ago. Check it out for the description of the characters on the dust sleeve, before they knew what a phenomenon it would become.

'Ben Kenobi, a shabby old desert rat...'
'Luke Skywalker, a young farmboy on the remote, sun-baked world of Tattooine, who is compelled to break from the dull chores on his uncle's ranch...'

Author: George Lucas
Recommended Ages: 6-99
Adult Fiction Collection"

April was an incredible month of generosity to the Bellingham Central Library Renovation Fund. It began with individual gifts from more than 100 community members for Library Giving Day, totaling $18,000! The month continued with a donation from the Friends of the Bellingham Public Library for $340,000. This brings our private fundraising total to more than $2.5 million, which is 70% of our $3.5 million goal.

“We are truly appreciative of every dollar donated to support the improvement of our local library facilities,” said Bellingham Library Director Rebecca Judd, who received the Friends’ gift at the non-profit’s annual meeting on April 18. The Friends of the Bellingham Public Library was formed in 1952 as a volunteer organization that exists to “support the library and literacy in our community.”

Thank you Friends and every individual donor for your unwavering support! To find out more about the Central Library Renovation and how to donate, visit https://bellinghampubliclibrary.org/library-giving

We're celebrating Asian, Pacific Islander and Desi American (APIDA) Heritage Month in May with books, films and more that feature APIDA authors, characters, and experiences. Lark, a Bellingham Public Library Clerk, recommends the adult fiction book "Katabasis" by R. F. Kuang for APIDA Heritage Month.

“Hell is bureaucracy. This dark academia fantasy draws inspiration from Dante’s descent into the Inferno to create an allegory for academic burnout. Blending existential philosophy, afterlife mythology, and paradoxical theory, this book follows two grad students training as magicians at Cambridge University as they navigate their own personal and literal hells and discover the prices they are each willing to pay for their ambition.”

We're celebrating Asian, Pacific Islander and Desi American (APIDA) Heritage Month in May with books, films and more that feature APIDA authors, characters, and experiences. Lark, a Bellingham Public Library Clerk, recommends the children's picture book "The Tray of Togetherness" by Flo Leung for APIDA Heritage Month.

“This is a celebration of the delicious food, vibrant traditions, and wonderful community that marks the festival of the Lunar New Year. Candied kumquats are such a delicious treat!” Recommended for ages 4 and up.

The NFL draft has wrapped up and there's still a long wait until football season. If you're looking for something to fill the time waiting for the official kick-off, BPL Clerk James has a reading recommendation just for you! The book is "Football" by Chuck Klosterman, and here's what James has to say about it.

"Disclaimer: I am a football fan.

Do you have a Superbowl Champion Seattle Seahawks shaped hole in your heart? Check out Chuck Klosterman's essay Football. Football is a book about America's obsession with the sport, why and how it has gotten so big, and why there is an expiration date on this cultural juggernaut. I identified with Klosterman's personal connection to the sport (football is a way I stay close to my father) and laughed out loud at some of his observations. It's a quick read, funny and insightful."
