We are still working for you, even though we don't have public office hours right now. The largest of Whatcom County departments, Public Works' primary objective is to maintain the integrity of the Whatcom County Road System in an efficient, cost effective manner that provides safe travel for the public. This is accomplished through the work of several divisions: Engineering, Equipment Services, and Maintenance and Operations. Public Works also provides year-round ferry service to Lummi Island. We also provide a variety of environmental services for the county including solid waste management; river and flood management; water resources management, and noxious w**d control for the County.

June 1 is Wild Salmon Day! This a time to celebrate salmon and recognize the importance of salmon to our region’s ecosystems, communities, and cultures.

Check out story map linked below! This interactive map highlights the challenges salmon face, the progress being made, and the collaborative work underway to help protect and restore salmon habitat across the Nooksack River and adjacent coastal streams for future generations. Whatcom County Public Works, Lummi Nation, Nooksack Indian Tribe, and the Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife are working together to support salmon recovery through habitat restoration, watershed planning, floodplain management, and long-term stewardship efforts.

This collaboration advances the commitments of the WRIA 1 Salmon Recovery Plan (https://salmonwria1.org/salmon-recovery/) to address barriers and contribute to restoring salmon runs that are essential for the health of the watershed and surrounding community.

The Whatcom County Flood Control Zone District (County) will open a public bid process TODAY (Wednesday, May 20) for the sale of a County-owned home located at 2096 Valley Highway in Acme.

The County originally purchased the property as part of flood-related planning and management efforts in the area. After evaluating current County needs, long-term use of the site, and financial considerations, the County determined that selling and removing the structure through a public bidding process is the most appropriate use of public funds and resources at this time. The County will retain ownership of the property and land; the bid process is only for purchase and removal of the house itself.

Additional information, including how to obtain the full solicitation at no charge, will be noted on the County Purchasing Bid Postings webpage - https://www.whatcomcounty.us/Bids.aspx. Questions can also be directed to the Purchasing Office at [email protected] and (360) 778-5330.
