Sun Community Service

Sun Community Service Serving people in Whatcom County with behavioral health needs by providing emergency shelter and supportive housing and funds to support our general operation.

Sun House has been providing transitional housing for people with serious, chronic mental illness since 1975. The Sun House accepts donations to help with unexpected repairs, special occasions (holidays, birthdays, etc.) Monetary donations are tax-deductible. We also welcome donations of household items such as towels, silverware, twin-sized sheets and toiletry items.

Sun Community Service provides emergency shelter and Permanent Supportive Housing to people in Whatcom County who are homeless and have significant behavioral health/mental health needs. We have been serving the people of Whatcom County since 1973. The environment of the Sun House is different from other agencies — instead of adhering strictly to a medical model, the house experience is similar to living in a community. People have the choice of how to manage their medications, spend their leisure time and how they structure their lives; both friendships and family relationships are encouraged as well as strengthened at the Sun House.

People who utilize services at the Sun House typically come from troubled backgrounds. with frequent interactions with emergency medical/mental health services and law enforcement — often cycling through jail, the emergency room, inpatient mental health units and living on the streets many years before coming to the Sun House. Sun Community Services works to break this cycle by teaching people how to manage their illness and live successfully in their communities.
