You may have seen recent news stories about Ebola, which is a rare disease in sub-Saharan Africa that spreads through contact with the body fluids of a sick person or animal. Ebola is a severe disease, so global news about it can feel scary; it’s entirely valid to feel concerned.

We can take comfort in knowing that only someone with symptoms can infect others. To date, no one with symptoms has entered the United States, no Ebola cases have been reported in the United States, and the risk to the public remains extremely low. In public health, we prepare for even the most unlikely health emergencies, including preparing for Ebola.

Part of our preparedness work includes:
Monitoring and ensuring appropriate isolation of travelers from affected areas who might get sick.
Coordinating with our local hospital, so we are prepared for a worst-case scenario if someone gets sick from Ebola.
Keeping local healthcare providers informed of the latest news and updates globally, nationally, and locally via Provider Alerts.

Myth: Only babies born to mothers with hepatitis B need the birth dose.

✅ Fact: Babies can also be infected during infancy and early childhood. Before the U.S. adopted universal birth dose vaccination, 9,000 babies were infected at birth each year, and another 9,000 children were infected before age 10.

The hepatitis B birth dose is essential for protecting all children.

Heat is one of the leading causes of weather-related fatalities each year. Follow these tips to keep yourself and others safe in hot weather.

Know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Exercising or working in hot weather can cause your body to heat rapidly and lose fluids and salts. Watch yourself and others for signs of heat illness: dizziness, nausea, weakness, rapid pulse and headache. If anyone shows these symptoms, get them out of the heat and cool them rapidly. If they are confused or losing consciousness, call 911.

Never leave children, vulnerable adults, or pets alone in a locked vehicle in the direct sun. Inside temperatures can rise rapidly, leading to heat stroke. If you see a heat-stressed pet or person alone in a locked vehicle, call 911. Washington state law allows bystanders to break into vehicles to rescue occupants in imminent danger.
