Whatcom County government provides an enormous variety of services to its citizens. There are nineteen county departments that provide or support the delivery of these services. Whatcom County is a Home Rule Charter County - one of only six in the State of Washington. The Home Rule Charter was adopted by 1978. The county covers 2119 square miles that border on British Columbia County to the North; Okanagan County to the East and Skagit County to the South and the Strait of Georgia to the West.

Watch out for this scam going around - remember Law Enforcement will NEVER contact you and suggest that you pay funds.

We are seeing another uptick in reports of scam phone calls, specifically regarding loved ones in jail. No one from the Whatcom County Sheriff's Office will call you and ask you to pay to post bail, get medical treatment or for ankle monitoring.

Just. Hang. Up!

Although many of these types of callers use telephone numbers with Whatcom County area codes and prefix numbers and some even show up identified as a law enforcement agency, most of the persons engaged in this fraudulent activity are actually out of state or out of the country and are very difficult to identify and capture.

Again...Just. Hang. Up!

It's Whatcom Trivia Monday . . . er . . . Tuesday! This frontiersman was one of Ferndale's most famous residents and served as one of Whatcom County's first postmen, delivering packages throughout the area, some legal and some not.

He famously was kidnapped in 1846 and held on Vancouver Island for two years before the Governor paid his ransom with a stack of blankets as tall as himself.

He spent his later years operating a saloon for the Bellingham Bay Coal Company and in 1904, the Old Settlers Association of Whatcom County recognized him as the oldest living settler that year.
