One great way to conserve water and protect our watershed is considering native plant options for your landscaping!

After 18 months of planning and collaboration, a beautiful new demonstration garden was planted last fall at the Sudden Valley Welcome Center (1850 Lake Whatcom Boulevard). The garden features over 300 native plants selected for their beauty, resilience, and support for birds, pollinators, and clean water. Interpretive signs throughout the space offer tips on creating your own native garden, reducing stormwater pollution, and protecting our local watershed. It was created through a partnership between the Sudden Valley Community Association, Whatcom County Public Works, and the Whatcom Conservation District as part of the Neighborhood Native Landscaping Program.

Stop by on June 4 from 5:30–7:00 PM for a casual, drop-in community event featuring free native plant seeds, activities for the kids, light refreshments, and a chance to chat with Whatcom County Master Gardeners and get your gardening questions answered.

It's warming up out there! Did you know most grasses naturally go dormant in the summer? Letting your lawn go gold allows you to save time and money with summer watering. Depending on your soil and how wet the summer is, it should only need to be watered
between once a week and once a month! Learn more about saving our water and saving your money at the Whatcom Water Alliance website.

It's National Public Works Week! For one spring week every year, the American Public Works Association encourages us to remember, recognize, and appreciate the infrastructure and people who keep our world running day to day.

Public works is all around you! Our small but mighty crew is in the field every day performing maintenance, repairs, and all of the tasks needed to provide clean drinking water and make sure waste is taken care of. It's easy to forget that under our feet are miles and miles of water and sewer pipes, and that's our goal - keep the system running so well, you can count on it without thinking about it!

Join us in celebrating National Public Works Week by taking a minute or two to celebrate the people and processes that often go unnoticed.

How many times have you turned on the tap today? Behind the water running in your home, there's an entire infrastructure that includes 8 reservoirs, 5 water booster stations, over 70 miles of water lines, 26 sewer lift stations, and over 87 miles of sewage collection and transmission lines.

May 3-9 is the American Water Works Association's annual drinking water week! This annual event focuses on recognizing the vital role water plays in our lives every day. Most of the work that keeps drinking water safe happens in the background - operators running the treatment plant, samples that have to be gotten to the lab for testing, maintenance of pipes, pumps and equipment, and everything in between.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 1 in 4 people worldwide do not have access to safe drinking water. This week, we recognize the work that goes into maintaining a working, reliable, readily available, and safe flow of water to our homes. Happy drinking water week!
