We have an exciting update from Hovander Homestead Park!

Our Parks staff are currently preparing the playgrounds for re-opening, including spreading around 200 yards of fresh playground chips across the play areas — enough to cover a football field.

The work is still underway, but we anticipate reopening the playgrounds this Saturday, just in time for Memorial Day weekend.

Looking for a great way to celebrate Mother’s Day weekend?

Start with the WSU Whatcom County Master Gardeners annual plant sale at Hovander Homestead Park this Saturday from 9am to 2pm. Then stop by the Roeder Home on Sunday for guided tours of the historic home with Whatcom County Historical Society (1-4pm), along with expert-led garden tours and advice from the Master Gardeners (12-3pm).

It's going to be a beautiful weekend to celebrate Mom!

It’s shaping up to be a beautiful weekend to get outside and explore a new trail! One of my personal favorites is Point Whitehorn Nature Reserve.

Perfect for a family adventure, this park features a short, one-mile trail that makes you feel like you’re in another world. The first .7 miles are fully accessible, with stunning viewpoints over the Strait of Georgia and San Juan Islands. Continue on, and a short but steep switchback with stairs leads down to the beach - perfect for beachcombing! It's got a little bit of everything!

Just a heads up: no dogs are allowed on this adventure.

We know you’re missing the playgrounds at Hovander Homestead Park — we are too!

December’s flooding washed away much of the playgrounds’ fall protection and damaged what was left behind. Unfortunately, it’s not as simple as raking in a few fresh chips — All the damaged material must be removed and replaced with truckloads of new wood chips to make sure everything is safe and ready for play. We’re working with a contractor to get it done right.

Thanks so much for your patience while we get things ready for safe playing again — we’re looking forward to reopening soon!
