There’s a blue home in Bellingham filled with gnomes, bookshelves, and celebration.

After waiting five years for an affordable home through KulshanCLT, Becky and her daughter Maddie finally found stability, community, and room to thrive. Maddie now has a neighborhood where she can walk to school, ride the bus independently, and visit the chickens across the street.

This is what affordable homeownership makes possible: connection, independence, and a place to truly belong. 💙

We want to hear from you. 🏡

What feels hardest about housing in Whatcom County right now?

Is it:
• Finding a home you can actually afford?
• Saving for a down payment?
• Renting while trying to stay close to work or family?
• Lack of housing for families?
• Fear of being priced out?
• Finding stable housing as a young person, senior, or working family?
• Something else entirely?

We know housing impacts nearly every part of life: your health, your stress levels, your relationships, your commute, childcare....

As we think about the future of permanently affordable homeownership in our region, we want to better understand what people are experiencing right now.

Drop your thoughts in the comments. (And, feel free to share this post so we can hear from more voices in our community.)

Because the people who love this community deserve to live in it,
Kulshan Community Land Trust creates permanently affordable homes that give local families the chance to put down roots, build stability, and remain part of the community they help sustain.

Here's a peek at our LaFreniere Court project in the Birchwood neighborhood. Each home is built to the highest standards, energy-efficient, and permanently affordable. We're accepting applications now! Want to learn more, or join our interest list? Visit: https://www.kulshanclt.org/birchwood-lafreniere-court

KulshanCLT homeowner Andy Koch is something of a local legend. His band, the Bad Dog Blues Society, is known to many across the region, and he performs throughout the Pacific Northwest and Alaska. He’s also a puppeteer, jester clown, educator, and founder of the Peregrine Puppet Theatre.

Now at retirement age, Andy credits the stability of affordable homeownership with opening an entirely new chapter of creativity and possibility.

Without the constant pressure and uncertainty that many now face around housing, Andy has been able to invest more deeply in his art, his teaching, and his community. While touring to play music, he also visits schools to perform puppet shows and teach children how to make balloon animals, bringing creativity, imagination, and joy wherever he goes.

“The kids are the best part. Often, kids don’t get enough creative play, so the puppetry I offer is perfect for that,” he said.

Andy's experience is proof that when people have roots, their gifts can truly flourish.

Today is World CLT Day! From a single organization in Albany, Georgia in 1969 to more than 600 CLTs across the globe today, each is rooted in the same stubborn, beautiful idea that land can serve people instead of profit.

We invite you to join more than 1,300 people registered for sessions (happening across five continents) during the Global CLT Virtual Summit.

Here in Whatcom County, KulshanCLT is part of that worldwide movement. Every permanently affordable home we create means:
-A family can put down roots
-A child can stay in their school district
-A community keeps its neighbors
-Homeownership remains possible for people who are increasingly priced out

You can help by:
• Becoming a monthly donor (sign-up today, and we'll receive an extra $10). https://givebutter.com/kulshancommunitystewards
• Making a one-time gift. https://givebutter.com/kclt
• Donating your old car. https://careasy.org/kulshan-community-land-trust
• Sharing our mission with a friend.
• Attending an event.
• Advocating for permanently affordable housing in our community.

Here's a (slightly) dramatized reenactment of selling your car on Marketplace:
Stranger: "Will you take $200?"
You: "It's listed at $4,500."
Stranger: "What about $250? My dog/cousin/a guy named Randy... needs it."
You: Boo!

There's a better way. Donate your vehicle to KulshanCLT, skip the circus, and help a Whatcom County family get one step closer to a home of their own. It's generally tax deductible (double-check with your accountant), stress free, and so deeply satisfying.

Best of all, there are no dogs, cousins, or awkward negotiations involved.
Here's how to donate your car: https://careasy.org/kulshan-community-land-trust

A huge thank you to Joey Winkler for helping capture the heart of KulshanCLT through his incredible photography and video work.

From documenting the joy, connection, and delight of our Magic of Belonging event (shown) to creating beautiful visual stories that help share our mission with the wider community, Joey’s work has helped bring our vision of permanently affordable homeownership to life.

We are deeply grateful for the creativity, care, and talent he brings to KulshanCLT.

Thank you, Joey, for helping us tell the story of belonging.

As if LaFreniere Court weren't amazing enough on its own, with 18 new, energy-efficient homes built to the highest standards, and prices beginning at $210K, did you know what's right next door? WWU's City Sprouts Farm!

City Sprouts Farm, a program of WWU’s Center for Community Learning, produces four to five tons of produce each year. The program is run by students. Roughly half of this year’s crop will be sold in a sliding-scale CSA (community-supported agriculture) program. The rest will be distributed through the WHOLE food pantry at Western as well as other nonprofit partners like Sea Mar Community Health Center and the Birchwood Food Desert Fighters.

Community Land Trust + Community Supported Agriculture = Homes and Harvests that Stay Local and Affordable
