There’s a decision in front of Whatcom County right now about the future of our jail.

And while it may sound like a single project, it carries much more with it. It reflects how we choose to care for people, how we support those in crisis, and what we believe public safety should look like.

Moments like this don’t come around often.

If you’ve been waiting for a time to get involved, this is one of them.

This is who runs the office. đź’›

From baby photos to building programs, sharing stories, and supporting our community, this is the team behind the work.

Every role looks different, but it all comes back to the same thing: care, connection, and showing up for Whatcom County.

What started as “please don’t make me play pickleball on camera”… turned into something much bigger 💛

Through the Pickled Pink and Movember tournaments, Armory Pickleball and this incredible community raised $2,000 for the Laurendeau Cancer Care Fund.

That support can help cover MRI bills, copays, groceries, or even gas to get to treatment. Real support, for real people, right here in Whatcom County.

We’re so grateful to Armory Pickleball and every player who showed up, shared their stories, and made this possible.

Cancer treatment is physically exhausting. It should not also mean losing your housing, draining your savings, or choosing between groceries and gas to chemotherapy.

Through the Laurendeau Cancer Fund, Chuckanut Health Foundation provides short-term financial assistance to Whatcom County residents in active treatment. Support may include help with transportation to care, rent or utility support, groceries, and insurance co-pays when costs become overwhelming.

CHF Board Member Dr. Kenneth Bachenberg recently shared a reflection on what he sees while reviewing applications for this fund. His full blog post explores the widening gap between income, public assistance eligibility, and the real cost of living in our community.

At one time, the Laurendeau Cancer Fund held $500,000. Today, less than $50,000 remains.

If you are able, please consider supporting local families facing cancer by donating through the link in our bio. You can also learn more about how the fund works on our website.

To read Dr. Bachenberg’s full reflection, visit his LinkedIn page and look for the post titled “Cancer Care Is a Canary in Our Healthcare System.”

🧡 Together, we can ensure a cancer diagnosis does not become a financial collapse.

What can you do this week to help promote living kidney donation?

is a Whatcom County resident who recently donated his kidney, and as he moves into the quieter phase of recovery, he wants to shift the focus outward.

Here are a couple ideas he suggested to get you started in promoting living kidney donation:
• Bring it up in conversation. Even a casual mention can make a difference. "Did you know you don’t have to be a match to donate a kidney for someone you care about? The voucher program makes that possible."

• Support the behind-the-scenes work that makes this advocacy possible. A monthly donation to Chuckanut Health Foundation helps sustain living kidney donation efforts alongside youth mental health, aging well, health equity, op**te response, and more across Whatcom County.

What’s one small thing you could do this week?
