Fire Chief Shaun McGinnis

Mission Statement: We will provide protection to the community and care for the community’s needs in a professional manner as an All Hazard/All Risk Response Agency. It is our mission to deliver a highly competent combination of proactive and reactive fire, rescue and emergency services that will provide t

he highest possible degree of protection to all citizens and their property from the dangers of modern society. Bellows Falls Fire Department History and Overview:

The Bellows Falls Fire Department is an ISO Class 4 fire department that provides emergency and non-emergency services to the Village of Bellows Falls, Vermont and the surrounding areas. Bellows Falls is located in northeast Windham County on the Connecticut River. The department patch reflects much of the history of the Bellows Falls Fire Department. On November 8, 1825, the Bellows Falls Fire
Company was formed as a result of several previous large fires. In 1831, reorganization created the Bellows Falls Fire Society, which
in turn set up districts for fire protection. The Village of Bellows Falls was incorporated 2 years later following the same boundaries as the Fire Society. Various independent fire companies were organized in response to major fires. They included the Abenaqui Company in 1860, the
Bridgemen Company in 1867, and the Shamrock Company in 1871. The hose, ladder, and axe on the patch represent the roles of the different fire companies as well as the tools they used. From the first hand drawn Hunneman Hand Tub of 1835, the Mount Kilburn. The hours of the clock on the Town Hall in the center of the patch point to 6:12 PM. This was the time of the alarm for a devastating fire at the Star Hotel in the Village Square on December 29, 1981 that claimed the lives of two Bellows Falls Firefighters in the line of duty. Firefighter Dana Fuller and Firefighter Terry Brown lost their lives while fighting this fire. The Department was volunteer/paid-on-call until the mid-1920’s at which time a full time Chief and a full time Driver were appointed. The Department has remained a combination department, with some full time firefighters and a larger group of On-call firefighters that respond at the time of the incident. Currently the Bellows Falls Fire Department prides itself on being a full service fire department that provides all types of service to the community including public fire education, fire code inspection and enforcement, fire suppression, technical rescue, emergency medical services, disaster and hazardous materials response and all other related activities. Firefighter Recruitment

We do have available positions for “On Call” firefighters. We are always looking for dedicated people who want to serve as part time On
Call firefighters. There is a time commitment required for both training and response to emergency calls. If you think you may be interested in being involved and participating with the Bellows Falls Fire Department you can contact the fire station at 463-4343. Public Fire Safety and Station Tours

The Bellows Falls Fire department also provides public safety education and station tours. Contact the fire station (463-4343) to schedule safety training or a station tour. The Bellows Falls Fire Department is located at 170 Rockingham Street at the north end of the Village.

After a busy day of running calls, we wanted to make sure that we took a moment to remember Terry Brown and Dana Fuller. Their sacrifice to this community forty-four years ago today at the Star Hotel fire will never be forgotten.

UPDATE: THE BRIDGE IS NOW CLEAR AND OPEN

A load of building materials has shifted on its trailer as it was crossing the New Arch Bridge. At some point this afternoon, the bridge will most likely be shut down so that the load can be safely removed. Please keep this in mind, as we have no timeline as of yet. Check back for updates. As of last evening the Bellows Falls Fire Department has officially become a part of the new Rockingham Fire and Rescue, a municipal fire department. This happened after a vote at Town meeting in March to form one municipal fire department. All three fire departments within Rockingham will now operate as one. Rockingham, Saxtons River and Bellows Falls stations will all remain open and operational. All members from the three departments are able to join if they have not already and we are always looking for new members. We are excited for this opportunity to protect and serve the citizens and visitors within the town and neighboring towns. Please keep an eye on the Rockingham Fire & Rescue page for updates.

🎃 Halloween Safety Reminder – Be Alert and Stay Safe! 👻

As the community celebrates Halloween, please use extra caution while out and about tonight! Expect heavy pedestrian and vehicle traffic throughout town as trick-or-treaters and families enjoy the evening.

🚶‍♂️ For Drivers:
• Slow down and stay alert for children crossing streets and driveways.
• Be extra cautious in neighborhoods and residential areas.
• Avoid distractions — put the phone down and keep your eyes on the road.

🧙‍♀️ For Trick-or-Treaters and Families:
• Carry a flashlight or wear reflective gear to stay visible.
• Walk on sidewalks and cross at corners or crosswalks.
• Avoid dark clothing when possible — bright or light colors help you be seen.
• Stay in groups and keep an eye on children at all times.

🚨 See Something, Say Something:
If you notice anything suspicious or unsafe, contact your local Police, Fire, or EMS immediately — or dial 911 in an emergency.

Let’s all do our part to keep this Halloween fun, safe, and spooky for everyone! 🎃🦇

Thank you,
BFFD

🚒 Bellows Falls Fire Department 2025 Fireman’s Parade

This year’s Fireman’s Parade was dedicated to Captain Larry Clark, 52-K2 (Safety Officer) — a proud 58-year member of the Bellows Falls Fire Department who passed away earlier this week. Captain Clark’s unwavering service, leadership, and dedication to the safety of our community will never be forgotten. ❤️

In a touching tribute, Captain Clark’s gear rode aboard our 1987 E-2, symbolizing his lasting presence and lifelong commitment to the Bellows Falls Fire Department.

We would like to extend our sincere thank you to all the participating fire departments, apparatus, and marching bands who made today’s parade such a meaningful tribute.

A special thank you to Officer Jillian Cenate of the Bellows Falls Police Department for her excellent work leading the parade and managing traffic control, and to the Westminster Fire Department for taking charge at the end of the parade and providing a safety buffer between the apparatus and regular traffic.

Finally, thank you to all the spectators and townspeople for your support, cooperation, and appreciation throughout the event.

Today’s parade was a heartfelt tribute in memory of Captain Larry Clark and a show of support for firefighters across the region who continue to serve with dedication and pride.

👨‍🚒 Rest easy, Captain Clark. We’ll take it from here.
