TIME FOR SUMMER FUN & SPECIAL PROJECTS!

The PGRHS member meetings will change locations and introduce new activities through the months of June, July and August. Members are invited to join the board in interesting projects for those who enjoy more in depth research.

We started this morning at the Oakview Community Church where we have a special storage unit. PGRHS Members Beth Byrne, Mary Harris, Deb Havens, Marilyn McGraw and Guy Jacobson played history detectives as boxes and filing cabinet drawers were opened and sorted, to catalog and organize our artifacts.

We meet again next Thursday, June 25 at 9am at the church to continue the exploration! If you enjoy a deep dive into local history, please join us!

When you start the morning with Marilyn's incredible coffee cake -- and the coffee -- you can hardly go wrong! Lots of fun and one truly amazing discovery we think has been hidden for 50 years. More on that later.

The PGRHS A250MI Committee has generated a number of activities to honor our nation's birthday, including patriotic displays. We've featured those at the KDL- Plainfield branch earlier.

Our A250MI Committee members have struck again! This time with the display cases in the lobby at Plainfield Charter Township. Featuring adorable teddy bears from private collections, you really have to stop by to see it in person to fully appreciate the details.

Thanks again to A250MI Chair Mary Harris for organizing this unique way to acknowledge our nation's SemiQuinCentennial!

And BTW, if you have a unique collection you would like to share, let us know! The Plainfield Charter Township lobby is a perfect place to showcase your items in unique displays.

As we posted earlier, the Plainfield Grand Rogue Society Docents welcomed fifth grade students from Highlands Middle School on two Fridays in May for tours of the Hyser Rivers Museum.

We were so pleased when Abby Lago returned with her family during our Sunday Open House. She was able to show her mom and sister two of the unusual artifacts in the museum collection: clam shells from the Grand River in the early 1900s, drilled to create buttons before plastic took over the industry.

Abby, we are so proud of you, and grateful for your return with your family!

If you visit our Hyser Rivers Museum Open House Sunday, June 7, you'll see the difference between last year and this year -- thanks to our gardening team: John VanKammen from Wild Ones-River City, Marti Alexander, Master Gardener, and Kathy Miller, Judy Wetters, and Vicki Leale from Kentwood Garden Society, President, Bonnie Monhart.

This fabulous group couldn't be stopped by the rain! We are so grateful -- and we're betting the bees and butterflies will be happy, too! This garden is dedicated to pollinators -- the Plainfield Grand Rogue Historical Society not only preserves the past, we think about the future as well.

Come on Mother Nature! We can't to see everything bloom!

Plainfield Grand Rogue Society Docents welcomed fifth grade students from Highlands Middle School on two Fridays in May for tours of the Hyser Rivers Museum. About one hundred students in two groups of fifty were guided through the rooms of the museum, learning the history of the building, why it was preserved from demolition, and what life used to be like when homes had no running water, no inside bathrooms, and outside kitchens.

The tours are one of the ways the PGHRS A250MI subcommittee has planned special events in honor of America’s 250th anniversary. The PGRHS Board of Directors welcomed the student tours with enthusiasm! Historical society Docents were surveyed and unanimously agreed to spend extra time planning for our young visitors.

Our thanks to Mary Harris, Chair of the PGHRS A250MI subcommittee and Amy Greever, PGRHS Director of Membership, working with President Deb Havens to arrange the planning and logistics with Highlands Middle School. Deb and Mary met with teachers and the Northview Public Schools Superintendent, Dr. Christina Hinds, who has supported the A250MI school activities here in Plainfield Township. We are so grateful for this partnership!

On May 22, students from classes led by Nikki Lewis, Andy Bouwens, Amber Brown and Jarrad Epkey were the first groups through. The following Friday, May 29, teachers Todd Visser, Mariah Welch, Erik Baker and Jordan Conklin brought their classes. Docents complimented all the students on their interest and behavior — we are so proud of all these kids!

Thanks to our fabulous Docents! Each of these volunteers met in training sessions to prepare for the content we would share to fifth grade students. Each student group arrived by bus, lined up in the parking lot behind their Student Leaders, then were led into one of the rooms by a Docent. At the sound of the old school bell, the groups rotated to another room. Everyone had a wonderful time ! We look forward to welcoming other student groups on these special tours.

It's America's 250th birthday this year! The PGRHS America250MI Committee recently worked with the Kent District Library, Plainfield Branch, to create patriotic displays.

Our sincere appreciation to the KDL- Plainfield staff for allowing us to install these displays in observance of the 250th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence: Regional Director Penni Zurgable, Jessica Weber, Assistant Branch Librarian, the Creative Sparks Group, and staff. They worked with committee members Marilyn McGraw, Sharon Wells, long time member of Friends of the Library, and committee chair, Mary Harris.

The display at the library Circulation Desk is at child's-eye height, but take a moment to enjoy it with your kids! There are also displays in the Magazine Room highlighting a selection of classic books for sale that speak to the history of our country.

A huge thanks to our America250MI committee members, Mary, Sharon and Marilyn, who are moving on to decorate the display cases in the Plainfield Charter Township lobby.

The library displays and those in the township lobby serve to honor our great national anniversary and hopefully stirs the passion for patriotism in the heart of every American.

The Plainfield Grand Rogue Historical Society was honored to host the Memorial Day Observance at Charles Weldon Veterans Memorial Park on Saturday, May 23. The day was cloudy and cool, the mood was somber. It was a fitting acknowledgement of our nation's loss of so many who gave their lives to preserve our American values and cherished freedoms.

Special thanks to participants in the day's observance:

Remarks and hours of organization efforts, Ron Howell, Vietnam Veteran, Co-Chair, Veterans Caucus; Brian Brinkman, Desert Shield Veteran, 24th Mechanized Infantry Division, who placed the memorial wreath at the foot of the monument; Presentation of Colors with Commander Tom Mroczkowski, American Legion Post 102, Rockford; Commander Courtney Peden, Kent County Veterans Honor Guard Rifle Salute; Daniel Smith, Scout Troup 283 B, who led the Pledge of Allegiance; and the very moving rendition of "Taps" performed by Will Garland, Comstock Park High School junior.

We are planning to post a video of the observance soon.

Thanks to Plainfield Charter Township for posting photos of Holly Jolly Holidays that took place last week. The Plainfield Grand Rogue Historical Society makes sure that Santa and Mrs. Claus attend Holly Jolly Holidays every year! Santa is the highlight of the event as he lights the beautiful Christmas tree, then spends time with each family taking pictures and listening to their hopes for a happy holiday❤️.

We love providing this warm traditional experience for our township -- we've already scheduled Santa's special appearance in 2026 (it's our secret North Pole connection!).

Thank you, Plainfield Township for these photos, and for our wonderful Fire Fighters who are such an exciting part of the evening when they arrive in that big red truck!

The Plainfield Grand Rogue Historical Society wishes everyone the happiest of holidays!
