This week, the Belmont Police Department joins law enforcement agencies across the country in recognizing National Police Week, a time dedicated to honoring the brave men and women who have given their lives in the line of duty and recognizing the sacrifices made by officers and their families every single day.

Here in Belmont, we are incredibly proud of the hard work, professionalism, and compassion shown every day by the members of the Belmont Police Department. Whether answering emergency calls, assisting someone in crisis, supporting victims, keeping our roadways safe, or simply being present for our community, our officers remain committed to serving with integrity and dedication.

Most importantly, we want to recognize how fortunate we are to serve a community that consistently supports and takes such good care of its police department. The partnership between Belmont residents and our officers is something we never take for granted and one we will always work hard to protect.

To all law enforcement officers, past and present, and especially to those we have lost, thank you for your service and sacrifice.

🚔 Belmont Police Department – Highway Safety Initiative 🚔

Over the next week, the Belmont Police Department will be placing a strong emphasis on highway safety enforcement, working with our state, county and local partners to saturate roadways looking for aggressive driving, distracted driving, and impaired driving.

In partnership with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the New Hampshire Office of Highway Safety, we are reinforcing a simple but critical message: Drive responsibly—lives depend on it.

Our initial enforcement efforts will be concentrated along the Route 106 corridor, an area that has seen nearly 2,000 serious crashes between 2017 and 2023. Far too many lives have been lost or forever changed along this stretch of roadway.

We’re asking for your help to make a difference:
• Stay focused and eliminate distractions while driving
• Obey posted speed limits
• Never drive under the influence

Through continued partnership with our community, we can make our roadways safer for everyone.

Drive safe, Belmont. đźš—

Today we proudly celebrate Officer Matthew Hurley on his graduation from the New Hampshire Police Standards and Training Academy.

Officer Hurley has demonstrated dedication and perseverance throughout his journey, by completing 12 weeks of Field Training and 18 weeks at the academy. He now returns home to Belmont to begin his shadow phase, the final step before transitioning to solo patrol.

This is a significant milestone, and one that reflects his commitment to serving our community with professionalism and integrity.

Please join us in congratulating Officer Hurley. Your family, your department, and your community stand behind you and wish you a long, safe, and successful career.

Great day connecting with the next generation!

The Belmont Police Department was excited to attend Belmont High School’s Career Fair today, where Officers Leahy and Faath had the opportunity to speak with students about what a career in law enforcement really looks like. From answering questions to sharing real-world experiences, it was a great chance to build relationships and provide insight into the profession.

Who knows… we may have just met a future Chief of Police!

It is with heavy hearts that the members of the Belmont Police Department share the passing of former Chief Earl Sweeney.

Earl faithfully served the Belmont community as a Police Officer for many years and he was Chief from 1961 to 1975, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, leadership, and unwavering commitment to public safety. His years of service helped shape our department and strengthen the bond between law enforcement and the community he cared so deeply about.

We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and all who had the honor of knowing him. His impact will not be forgotten.

Rest in peace, Chief Sweeney. Thank you for your many years of service and for the lasting difference you made in Belmont.

This week, the Belmont Police Department proudly recognizes National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week.

Behind every call for service, there are dedicated professionals working tirelessly behind the scenes. Today, we want to highlight two of our everyday heroes, Dispatcher Daniel Redin and Dispatcher Tricia Randall.

They are the first voices you hear when you call the station and often the first faces you see when you walk through our doors. Their role goes far beyond answering phones, they are a critical lifeline for our community and our officers.

Daniel and Tricia are instrumental in our “Good Morning Belmont” program, providing our senior residents with a friendly, reassuring connection each day. They are also the calm, steady presence during some of the most difficult moments in a person’s life.

Thank you, Dispatcher Redin and Dispatcher Randall, for keeping our officers safe, for answering the call, and for your unwavering service to the Belmont community.

Today, every member of the Belmont Police Department, both civilian and sworn, came together for our annual Department Meeting.

This important tradition gives us the opportunity to share a meal, connect as a team, and hear Chief Akerstrom’s goals and vision for the year ahead. It also serves as a time to reflect on the work we do and recognize those who have gone above and beyond in service to our community.

We are proud to recognize the following members for their outstanding contributions:

• Chief Mark Lewandoski (ret.) – Distinguished Service Medal
• Sgt. David Estes (ret.) – Distinguished Service Medal
• Captain Evan Boulanger – Chief’s Commendation
• Detective Sergeant Raechel Moulton – Citation for Meritorious Service
• Detective Sergeant Raechel Moulton – Chief’s Commendation
• Sergeant Christopher Rideout – Chief’s Commendation
• Officer Syntia Somogyi – Community Service Citation
• Dispatcher Tricia Randall – Outstanding Commendation

The men and women of the Belmont Police Department are ordinary people who do extraordinary things every single day.

In our profession, we are often called to serve during the most difficult moments in a person’s life. Today was a meaningful opportunity to recommit ourselves to compassion, a victim-first mindset, and our unwavering dedication to the community we proudly serve.

We thank the Town of Belmont for its continued support of our department and of public safety as a whole.

Thank you to Ruth Mooney (Chairman of the Board of Selectman) for attending this meeting.

Also a special thank you to the Gilmanton Police Department, Tilton Police Department and Belknap County Dispatch for assisting with coverage while we took this time to meet.
