Belmont Public Library

Belmont Public Library Founded in 1893, our library has proudly served residents from the same building since 1927. Come discover, learn, and grow with us — we’re glad you’re here!

We’re here to connect our community with resources, programs, and services for all ages. The Belmont Library was established in 1893 and originally housed in the back of a store on Main Street. A few years later, the library was moved into the upstairs of the Fire Department Hose House where it shared quarters with the Selectmen's Office. In 1927, the owners of the Belmont Hosiery Company, George

E. Duffy and Walter E. Duffy, made a gift to the town of a new Library Building. Architects were Wells and Hudson and the style chosen was Colonial Revival. The Hose House was moved to another site and the current Library building was erected. On February 10, 1928, the new Library was dedicated. Not only did the Duffy brothers grant the town with a new building, but they also gifted funds to maintain the building into the future. Furthermore, the brothers purchased a beautiful tall clock that had been made by clockmaker Elisha Smith of Sanbornton for the Library, which is still there today.

Calendar Girls

Starring Helen Mirren and Julie Walters

True-life events are the basis of this film and the reality of what transpires makes the elements of comedy and conflict meaningful.

Members of local chapter of The Women’s Institute, a women’s group that is very conventional, seek a novel way to raise funds for a charity that is near and dear to their hearts. The women must overcome their individual inhibitions and resistance to a daring proposal and, at the same time, they must have the approval of the Governing Board of the Women’s Institute where politics are front and center.

One by one, the twelve women invested in the fund-raising scheme find courage to carry their idea forward and succeed in gaining the approval of the once-reluctant president of their local chapter of the Women’s Institute.

The authenticity of the material is rewarding. Filming took place in and around the village of Kettlewell in North Yorkshire, England. The scenery is gorgeous!

Kelly

All Creatures Great and Small by James Herriot

Book and DVD TV series both are available for this wonderful title. I call it a double dipper or great choices! I have read and reread this book and most of James Herriot's books about being a country veterinarian in the Yorkshire Dales 1930's-1970's. There is humor, there is drama, there is heartfelt sincerity and of course the characters James meets along the way are wonderful. And then there's the place - the Yorkshire Dales - a place like no other. The book is such a good book that has stood the test of time. You don't have to be an animal lover to enjoy this book or the series as the people are very entertaining.

This newer version of the popular original PBS series is so beautifully filmed I cannot say enough good about it. It is truly one of the very few series left on television that the entire family can watch. It is surely a "put your comfy clothes on, grab your favorite beverage and snack and snuggle in" kind of viewing. We have 5 seasons of All Creatures Great & Small available to borrow at BPL. Even if you've seen it once, feel free to borrow again and rewatch - no judgement here as I confess to doing that myself. :)
