☀️ Thank you, Lakeside Elementary, for inviting us to your first responder day!

👩🏼‍🏫 The students were so patient and well mannered and the teachers were equally excited to not be the ones teaching!

⛑️ We explained to the kids how Rescue is different from Fire, how air bags and cribbing can assist in rescuing cattle, what the the cutters and spreaders should and should NOT be used on, A B C and D pillars on a vehicle, rope rescue tools and the most asked question: what happens when the battery for a tool dies? (Don’t worry, we have plenty of back up batteries!)

Mitchell County Rescue Squad trained on the ropes last night.

High-angle rope rescue involves using specialized ropes, harnesses and hardware to rescue individuals from terrain with slopes of 45 degrees or more, such as tall buildings, cliffs, or grain elevators. Rescuers rely on main and belay systems with safety mechanisms — to rappel, stabilize and raise patients.

Rescuers utilized the Res-Q-Jack struts and a pin-free head fitting to create a technical rescue tripod. We were able to anchor off of a truck and members of multiple entities were able to take turns completing duties for the rescue.

Thank you to Mitchell County EMS and Mitchell County Rural Fire District #3 for taking the time to “learn the ropes” so we can all work as a better team in a time of need!

The ROTH ID TAG Identification System is an information tag that can be affixed to any car seat or product used by an infant, young child, or person under the care of a guardian. If the driver becomes incapacitated for any reason, first responders are trained to look for these tags for the next emergency contact. From car seats to walkers, for young to old, the options are endless!

On this day in 2021, central Kansas experienced a historic wind and fire event. Winds ranging from 80 to 100 mph were reported, toppling numerous power lines that ignited several large and deadly grass fires, according to the National Weather Service.

The most devastating of these was the Four County Fire, located north of Hays and Russell. This fire scorched over 163,000 acres, resulting in two fatalities, killing thousands of cattle and destroying numerous homes.

The Mitchell County Rescue Squad was graciously awarded a grant by the Solomon Valley Community Foundation for four Scott industrial airpacks and four masks. These airpacks will be used to serve the rescue squad when air quality is compromised or unknown such as hazardous material incidents and confined space rescues. We pride ourselves in having quality equipment that is ready for any job we get called to handle. Thank you to the community foundation for helping us keep high standards and taking pride in the emergency services of your community!
