Beloit Police Department-Public Service Announcement
Rental Scams on the Rise

The Beloit Police Department is seeing an increase in rental scams targeting our community. These scams often appear legitimate at first glance, but they are designed to take your money and personal information.

Scammers are copying real property listings from trusted websites and reposting them at lower prices to attract quick interest. In some cases, the property is not even available for rent. Once contact is made, they pressure you to send a deposit or provide personal information before you have a chance to verify the listing.

Stay alert and protect yourself:
• Be cautious of rental prices well below market value
• Do not send money, deposits, or application fees without verifying the property
• Never provide personal or financial information to someone you have not confirmed as legitimate
• Avoid landlords who refuse to meet in person or allow you to view the property
• Be wary of requests for payment through gift cards, wire transfers, or payment apps
• Cross-check listings on multiple reputable websites

Use common sense. If it feels off, stop and verify before moving forward.

Facebook Marketplace and similar platforms are common places where these scams appear, but they are not the only source. Always take time to confirm who you are dealing with.

If you believe you have been targeted or have fallen victim to a rental scam, contact the Beloit Police Department immediately. Reporting these incidents helps protect others in our community.

Stay vigilant. Protect your information. Verify before you trust.

Spotlight of that day goes to this individual. Through our great sleuthing the other day, we noticed that they decided not to pay attention to all construction barriers, with all the fancy flashing lights going off-road, damaging property that didn’t belong to them, and failing to obey this little thing we call a traffic control device.

We were able to identify the vehicle's owner and will be sending some paperwork to them. This is a reminder that those construction barriers are there for a reason, and they are not to be disobeyed. It is for the safety of the workers and the public. Also, UTVs and Golf Carts will adhere to the same rules of the road.

ITS A LITTLE BIT OF PAIN FOR A LOT OF GAIN.

Thank you, everyone.

Heads up, Beloit.

If you own a golf cart or UTV and plan to drive it on city streets, it needs to be registered with the Beloit Police Department.

Here’s what you need to know:

• Registration is $25 through April 1
• Starting April 2, the cost increases to $50
• This applies to all golf carts and UTVs operated within city limits

This is a quick and simple process that helps keep everyone safe and compliant on our streets.

Stop by the Beloit Police Department to get your registration taken care of before the deadline.

Save yourself the extra cost and get it done early.

As always, we appreciate your cooperation and support in keeping Beloit a safe place to live and drive.

Please share.
