🚨 Back-to-School Safety Reminder from the Town of Turtle Police Department! 🚨

​As a new school year gets underway, our community's streets are buzzing once again with yellow buses, eager students, and busy mornings. The Town of Turtle Police Department wants to remind all residents and drivers to stay alert and help keep our children safe!

​Here are a few important tips for parents, drivers, and students as our kids head back to school:

​🚌 Watch for School Buses:
When flashing red lights are active, traffic in both directions must stop. Give buses plenty of room, and never pass a stopped school bus from behind or from the opposite direction except on a divided highway. Let’s make sure everyone gets to school and back home safely!

​🚶 Driver Awareness in Neighborhoods:
Please slow down in school zones, residential areas, and near bus stops. Keep an eye out for children walking, biking, or waiting for the bus, especially during early morning hours when visibility can sometimes be reduced.

​👁️ Stranger Danger & Situational Awareness:
Talk with your children about staying aware of their surroundings while walking to or waiting at the bus stop.
​Remind kids to stick with a buddy or group of friends whenever possible.
​Teach them never to accept rides, treats, or gifts from strangers.
​Instruct them to immediately tell a trusted adult, teacher, or law enforcement officer if anyone approaches them or makes them feel uncomfortable.

A BACK TO SCHOOL REMINDER FOR PARENTS

Before you click "post" on your kids’ cute back to school picture, here are some things to keep in mind for their safety:

Be careful about posting too much of their personal information on a “back-to-school” board because it can make them a target for identity theft, scams, or even physical harm.

Those boards children hold when posing for a picture often include intimate details like:

▪Full name
▪Age or grade
▪School name
▪Teacher’s name
▪Hobbies or favorite things

Sometimes, their house number is even unintentionally shown in the background, which can be problematic, too.

When combined, these little details about your kids can give strangers enough information to figure out where they will be, what they like, and even how to approach them in a convincing way. Criminals or predators can use it for:

▪Location tracking (knowing their daily routine)
▪Impersonation (posing as a trusted adult)
▪Phishing or scams (targeting parents or schools)

A safer option is to make a version of the board that leaves out personal identifiers: using just first name or initials, the year, and maybe a fun fact that isn’t tied to location or routine.

Good morning,

With the upcoming school year quickly approaching, we would like to remind the public to anticipate changes in local traffic patterns around the School District of Beloit Turner. Which includes Powers Elementary School, Garden Prairie Intermediate School, Turner Middle School, and FJ Turner High School.

Due to the influx of drivers heading toward these schools, the surrounding roads will experience increased congestion. To help ensure safety and maintain order, directed patrols with increased staffing will be conducted during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up hours.

If your daily commute takes you through this area and you do not need to travel near the school, we recommend considering alternate routes to avoid potential delays.

🚨 PUBLIC HEALTH NOTICE: West Nile Virus in Rock County 🚨

We’ve been advised by the Rock County Public Health Department that mosquitoes in Rock County have tested positive for West Nile Virus (WNV).
WNV is spread through the bite of an infected mosquito (it does not spread directly between people or animals). While about 80% of infected individuals show no symptoms, others may experience fever, headache, fatigue, and muscle aches. Less than 1% develop severe illness, putting older adults and those with compromised immune systems at the highest risk.

The risk is greatest in late summer and continues until a hard frost. Please take precautions to protect yourself and your family:

🦟 Avoid Mosquito Bites:
* Use insect repellent (DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or IR3535).
* Treat clothing with permethrin (do not apply directly to skin).
* Stay indoors during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.
* Wear loose, long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and socks.

🏡 Mosquito-Proof Your Home:
* Remove standing water from flower pots, buckets, tires, gutters, and downpours.
* Flip over unused wheelbarrows, kiddie pools, canoes, and kayaks.
* Change water in bird baths and pet dishes at least every three days.
* Maintain pools, hot tubs, and saunas, and drain water from pool covers.
* Ensure window and door screens have no holes.

It was our absolute honor to support the Fire and Iron Motorcycle Club on their ride today!

Our officers had a great time escorting the group through Shopiere and helping them safely stay together throughout their journey. A huge thank you to our partners at the Town of Turtle Fire Department for stepping up to help out and keeping everyone safe along the route as well.

Events like this highlight the fantastic partnerships we share with riders and community groups alike.

Thank you to the Fire and Iron MC for your continued support of our community engagement efforts and for letting us be a part of your day. Ride safe out there!
