*HEAT ADVISORY EXTENEDED UNTIL FRIDAY 09/04/2026
DO NOT LEAVE DOGS IN CARS. DO NOT LEAVE DOGS OUTSIDE FOR EXTENDED PERIODS OF TIME.*
The National Weather Service has issued HEAT ADVISORY effective NOW until 8PM FRIDAY 09/04/2026, and an AIR QUALITY ALERT effective NOW until 7PM WEDNESDAY 09/02/2026 for our area.
Heat index values over 105 degrees are expected.
Heat related illnesses increase SIGNIFICANTLY during extreme heat and high humidity conditions, and can quickly result in heatstroke and death.
*Dogs and cats experience heat much worse than humans and take significantly longer time to cool down.*
Brachycephalic pets (flat faced breeds like pugs, bulldogs, Persian cats) and overweight, elderly, very young, or already sick animals overheat much faster.
Due to high temperatures and high humidity, pets should not be kept outdoors during this time and no standard outdoor shelter shall be considered ‘protection from the weather'. Outside time for pets should be greatly limited and pets should be monitored. Avoid having pets in cars at this time and never leave a dog in car for any amount of time. Animal Control may be issuing citations to any persons found to be in violation of Belton City Ordinance Chapter 4 Sec. 4-28 (a), stating “No owner or person caring for an animal shall fail to provide such animal with sufficient and wholesome food and water, proper shelter and protection from the weather…and with human care and treatment. Any animal not afforded the care and treatment described and required in the section may be impounded in accordance with the provisions hereof.’
