A vehicle fire was initially dispatched this afternoon along Highway 29 North in Williamston. Thanks to the quick response of firefighters, the fire was contained to the trailer, preventing it from spreading to the towing vehicle or surrounding area.

Our department receives limited taxpayer funding, which makes additional funding opportunities like this important to meeting the needs of our department.

Please contact your State Senators and ask them to support funding for local fire departments. Funding for our Palmetto 800 radios and infrastructure improvements would help address needs that are difficult to cover within our regular operating budget.

I had multiple people ask this afternoon - what community investments in public safety did you request that are not being funded? I’ve been going to Columbia since well before I was elected to the SC House to advocate for public safety funding, specifically to our local fire and police departments. Let’s keep up the fight for funding our local first responders!!!

Here is the complete list from my funding request for fire departments:

- West Pelzer Fire Department - $65,000 for Palmetto 800 radios and structural improvements to the building

- City of Anderson Fire Department - $42,817 for extrication tools to replace the set that is 30 years old.

- Cheddar Fire Department - $10,000 for two sets of bunker gear

- Whitefield Fire Department - $87,000 for Palmetto 800 radios and infrastructure improvements

- Williamston Fire Department - $115,200 replace expired air paks.

Contact your Senators and let them know that you want projects just like this funded across SC!!

This afternoon, Whitefield firefighters responded to a diesel fuel spill that created hazardous driving conditions along a one-mile stretch of McAlister Road, through the US 29 N roundabout, and onto Welcome Road. The diesel fuel left the roadway extremely slick, causing motorists to lose traction.

Due to the extent of the affected area and the quantity of spill-control materials required to mitigate a spill of this size, Anderson County HazMat Team and SCDOT were requested to assist with absorbent and sand.

Big thanks to the South Carolina Legislature for their continued support of the VSAFE grant program. This year, our department received over $14,000 through the program, which allowed us to purchase three sets of structural firefighting gear and twenty-four pairs of firefighting gloves to maintain compliance with NFPA standards.

The VSAFE (Volunteer Strategic Assistance and Fire Equipment) program provides critical funding to help volunteer fire departments meet essential needs such as protective gear, equipment, and training. For small, rural departments like ours, programs like VSAFE make a real difference in keeping our firefighters safe and mission-ready.

We’re grateful for the Legislature’s commitment to public safety and to the South Carolina State Firefighters’ Association for their ongoing advocacy.

Thank you South Carolina State Firefighters' Association and South Carolina State Fire!

We are grateful to The South Carolina Forestry Commission for awarding Whitefield Volunteer Fire Department a Volunteer Fire Assistance (VFA) 50/50 matching grant.

Through this program, Whitefield recently purchased seven handheld two-way radios to enhance firefighter safety and strengthen emergency communications in the wildland-urban interface.

These radios will support both local emergency response operations and statewide firefighter mobilization efforts during large-scale incidents, including deployments such as the recent Table Rock and Persimmon Ridge fires.
