Please avoid any type of outdoor burning at this time. With the dry conditions and strong winds, fires can spread quickly and become uncontrollable.

Also, please do not throw cigarette butts on the ground — even a small spark can start a fire in these conditions.

Several area departments are currently responding to multiple field fires at this time.

Thank you for helping keep our community safe!

🔋🔥 Fire Prevention Week is Here!

This year’s theme: “Charge Into Fire Safety — Lithium-Ion Battery Awareness.”

Lithium-ion batteries power many of the things we use every day — phones, e-bikes, scooters, laptops, power tools, and more. When used properly, they’re safe and reliable, but when damaged or improperly charged, they can catch fire or even explode.

There was over 800 reported fires caused by Lithium batteris in 2024.

Here are 3 Key Steps to keep you and your family safe:

1️⃣ Buy Only Listed Products

When purchasing devices or batteries, look for safety certification marks such as UL, ETL, or CSA.
✅ Only buy from reputable manufacturers and retailers.
🚫 Avoid cheap or knock-off batteries and chargers — they may not meet safety standards.

2️⃣ Charge Devices Safely

💡 Always use the charger and cord that came with your device or one approved by the manufacturer.
⚡ Charge devices on a hard, nonflammable surface — never on beds, couches, or under pillows.
🔌 Unplug once fully charged to prevent overheating.
🚫 Don’t charge devices overnight or leave them unattended while charging.
🌡️ Keep batteries and devices away from direct sunlight, heat sources, or extreme cold.

3️⃣ Recycle Batteries Responsibly

Never throw lithium-ion batteries in household trash or recycling bins — they can start fires in garbage trucks or recycling centers.
♻️ Take them to a certified battery recycling center.
Find a drop-off site near you at call2recycle.org.

⚠️ Additional Safety Tips:
• Stop using a device if you notice swelling, odor, leaking, or unusual heat.
• Store batteries in a cool, dry place, away from flammable materials.
• If a battery catches fire, use a Class B or ABC fire extinguisher — or call 911 and get to safety.
• Do not crush, puncture, or attempt to remove batteries from devices unless the manufacturer provides instructions.
• Keep batteries and chargers away from children and pets.

Let’s all “charge safely” this Fire Prevention Week and help prevent lithium-ion battery fires in our homes and community! 🔥🏠r
