🍄 Take a closer look at the forest floor this fall! Illinois is home to many different kinds of mushrooms, including these two native species you may spot in our area.

🟡 Chanterelles are yellow to orange and often grow in hardwood forests, especially around oak trees. Their fruiting bodies can appear from late May through September.

🍂 Oyster mushrooms have fan-shaped white, gray, or gray-yellow caps and grow on stumps, logs, and other rotten wood. They can appear in late fall.

Mushrooms are an important part of our ecosystems, so take a moment to appreciate them when you spot one on the trail. Just remember, never eat a wild mushroom unless you are absolutely certain of its identification.

🌳 Welcome to OAKtober! All month long, we’re celebrating the oak trees that are an important part of Boone County’s natural landscape. Oaks provide food and shelter for wildlife, support healthy ecosystems, and can live for generations.

We’re starting with the White Oak, Illinois’ state tree and a native species found right here in Boone County. White Oaks can grow to impressive sizes and are known for their rounded leaf lobes and acorns, which provide food for wildlife. 🍂

As you explore this fall, take a closer look at the oak trees around you. Can you spot a White Oak?

Planning a fall hike? Wear layers, bring water, and give yourself plenty of time to enjoy the trail. Fall weather can change quickly, and shorter days mean it gets dark earlier. Most importantly, slow down and take time to notice the sights and sounds around you. 🍂

Time for an acorn hunt! Acorns are an important food source for many Illinois animals, and you can find them under several different oak species. Keep an eye out for these three:

🌳 White Oak: Green to green-brown acorns with a cup covering about one-fourth of the nut.
🌳 Bur Oak: One of the largest Illinois oak acorns, with a hairy cup and a fringe of long scales.
🌳 Black Oak: Red-brown acorns with a cup that has a ragged edge.

Next time you’re walking through the woods, look down and see how many different acorns you can find!
