πŸ–€β€οΈπŸ’š June 19 is Juneteenth – A Day of Freedom, Reflection, and Celebration πŸ’šβ€οΈπŸ–€

On June 19, 1865 – more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation – Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, with news that the Civil War had ended and enslaved people were finally free.

That day became known as Juneteenth – a blend of "June" and "nineteenth." It is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States.

In 2021, Juneteenth became a federal holiday – Juneteenth National Independence Day.

πŸ’š Juneteenth & Senior Connections πŸ’š

At Senior Connections, we serve older adults of all races, backgrounds, and lived experiences. We know that history shapes health, wealth, and wellbeing.

Many Black seniors face higher rates of chronic disease, lower lifetime earnings, and less access to quality care – all rooted in historical injustice.

Juneteenth is a reminder that freedom and equality are not guaranteed. They must be fought for, celebrated, and protected every day.

We are committed to serving ALL seniors with dignity, respect, and cultural humility. πŸ–€

πŸ–€πŸ’šβ€οΈ A Final Thought:

Juneteenth is a day of joy – but also a day of truth-telling. It honors the resilience of those who endured slavery and celebrated freedom against all odds.

Today, we celebrate freedom. Tomorrow, we keep working for justice.

Happy Juneteenth from all of us at Senior Connections. πŸ–€

♾️ June 18 is Autistic Pride Day – Celebrating Neurodiversity at Every Age ♾️

Today, we celebrate Autistic Pride Day – a time to honor autistic voices, promote acceptance, and recognize that autism is not a tragedy but a natural part of human diversity.

Did you know? Autism isn't just a childhood condition.

πŸ“Š An estimated 2-3% of adults over 65 are autistic – but most were never formally diagnosed.
πŸ“Š Many autistic seniors grew up in an era when autism was poorly understood, often mislabeled, or simply ignored.
πŸ“Š Others were diagnosed with intellectual disabilities, mental illness, or "eccentricity" – never receiving the support they needed.

♾️ What Autistic Pride Means:

βœ… Acceptance, not just awareness – We move beyond "autism speaks" to "autism listens."
βœ… Nothing about us without us – Autistic people should lead conversations about autism.
βœ… Celebrating strengths – Honesty, deep focus, loyalty, unique perspectives, and passionate interests.

The symbol? A rainbow infinity sign (♾️) – representing infinite diversity and infinite possibilities.

πŸ“ž Resources for Autistic Seniors & Families:

🧩 Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN) – www.autisticadvocacy.org
🧩 AANE (Association for Autism and Neurodiversity) – Support for adults and seniors
🧩 Senior Connections – We can help connect you to local resources, social groups, and supportive services

♾️ A Final Thought:

Autistic Pride Day isn't about being proud "despite" autism. It's about being proud as an autistic person – at any age.

Whether you're 8 or 80, your brain is beautiful exactly as it is. πŸ’œ

To our autistic elders: We see you. We honor you. And we're glad you're here.

Happy Autistic Pride Day! β™ΎοΈπŸŒˆ

🧠 Forgetting where you put your keys? That’s normal.

Forgetting how to get to the grocery store? That might be different.

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia. It slowly steals memory, thinking skills, and the ability to do everyday tasks.

By the numbers:
πŸ“Š 6.9 million Americans had Alzheimer’s in 2024
πŸ“ˆ That number could rise to 13.8 million by 2060

Early warning signs to watch for in yourself or a loved one: ⚠️

Memory loss that disrupts daily life (asking the same question over and over)

Trouble finishing familiar tasks (like driving to church or recording a TV show)

Losing the ability to retrace steps (misplacing things and can't find them)

Withdrawing from social activities

The good news: There are treatments that can slow the disease. And Medicare covers several Alzheimer's medications.
