Bemidji Police Department presented a citizen certificate of recognition to Sky Detmers.

On 12/29/2025 at approximately 04:05 hours, Beltrami County dispatch received a report of an unconscious male bleeding from the head and face at 1200 Paul Bunyan Dr NW, the AmericInn Hotel.

Upon officers’ arrival it was determined that the male patient was deaf, and he was attempting to speak via sign language. Bemidji EMS arrived on scene a short time later, EMT SkyBlue Rain Detmers being a member of the two-person squad responding.

Sky exhibited great patience and compassion while dealing with the male patient, who was only able to speak in Spanish sign language. Furthermore, Sky demonstrated an ability to think on her feet in a complex and fluid scene, by employing the use of a Spanish sign language translation app. While only being able to ask “yes or no” questions to the patient Sky was able to piece together that he had been staying at the hotel with two other deaf males.

Based on the information brought to light by Sky’s quick thinking and patience, officers and EMS were able to check the welfare of the two friends the patient had been staying with and confirm nobody else was injured.

Moreover, up to this point the male patient who was intoxicated, was reluctant to receive medical care despite having sustained extensive facial injuries. Sky took the time to explain to the patient that it was in his best interest to go to the hospital for medical treatment. Despite the difficulties and a double language barrier, Sky was successful in persuading the patient to go willingly with EMS to the hospital.

Sky embodied the highest standard of patient care taking her time to meet the needs of the patient despite considerable obstacles facing her. As a result of Sky’s quick thinking and imperturbability other first responders were able to confirm the welfare of everyone on scene, and her patient received the medical care he needed.

The Bemidji Police Department recognizes Sky’s outstanding assistance under these difficult circumstances in assisting officers in ensuring the safety of the male patient.

As we close out 2025, we want to recognize a milestone that doesn’t happen by accident: 20 years of service. Earlier this year, we had the opportunity to honor three individuals who have spent decades serving our community, including more than 20 years with Bemidji Ambulance.

🔹 Nathan Preuss, EMT: a steady presence on the truck known for his reliability, positive attitude, and willingness to show up for patients and coworkers alike.

🔹 Joseph “JP” Corser, Director: a thoughtful, behind-the-scenes leader whose calm approach and high standards help guide our standard of care every day.

🔹 Dr. Corser, Medical Director: a trusted medical leader whose compassion and patient-first perspective have shaped care at Bemidji Ambulance for many years.

Twenty years of service represents thousands of calls, countless decisions, and an extraordinary level of commitment. We are proud to recognize Nathan, JP, and Dr. Corser; and are grateful for the experience, leadership, and stability they continue to bring to our team.
