On Wednesday, Bemidji's Heritage Preservation Commission launched a long-seeded plan to honor century-old buildings and preserve the city's treasured history.

On this Memorial Day, we remember.
This photograph, taken in 1922 by Bemidji photographer Arthur Allen Richardson—also known as A.A. Richardson or simply “Rich”—shows a crowd gathered at Greenwood Cemetery to honor fallen soldiers. Early automobiles line the muddy road, and a marching unit is moving down the center of the road.

Memorial Day traditions like this remind us of the deep roots of community remembrance, sacrifice, and the power of gathering to reflect.

When out and about do you ever look at the sidewalk and wonder, “WPA 1940? What does that mean?”

We’re creating a list of all the different plaques, stamps, and monuments within city limits, and YOU can help!

When out on your next stroll, send us a photo with whatever knowledge you can share with us so we can preserve as much local history as possible!

Bemidji Heritage Preservation Commission has started a new fun public engagement project, 100 Year Old Structures!

If your house or a building you frequent within city limits is 100 years old fill out an application, you receive a cool window decal to show off! Applications are reviewed monthly at BHPC meetings.
