ALFALFA, Ore. — At its Feb. 11 meeting, the Alfalfa Fire District Board of Directors voted to place a local option levy on the May 19, 2026, Primary Election ballot.
If approved, the measure would fund district operations, retain one current grant-funded firefighter/EMT position set to expire June 30, and hire one additional full-time firefighter/EMT. Together, these two full-time positions would augment the existing Fire Chief position and significantly strengthen the District’s emergency response capability.
The proposed levy rate is $1.75 per $1,000 of assessed property value. For example, the annual cost to a property owner with an assessed value of $300,000 would be $525 per year.
Alfalfa Fire District currently responds to between 150 and 200 emergency calls annually, and call volume continues to rise. These calls include medical emergencies, motor vehicle crashes, wildland fires, structure fires, and other urgent incidents requiring immediate response.
One firefighter/EMT position is currently funded through a temporary grant that expires June 30. Without passage of the levy, that position will be eliminated. As a result, the District would be reduced to only one paid responder — the Fire Chief — to cover the entire district.
If the levy does not pass, the District will face severe cuts to emergency services. These reductions may include:
Increased response times due to limited staffing
Greater reliance on volunteer availability
Increased dependence on neighboring agencies for mutual aid
Reduced capacity to handle multiple or overlapping emergencies
Increased strain on remaining personnel
“With call volumes increasing, maintaining adequate staffing is critical to protecting our community,” said Fire Chief Chad LaVallee. “If the levy passes, it will allow us to retain a firefighter/EMT position that would otherwise be lost and add one additional full-time position. That means more reliable coverage, safer operations, and improved service to our residents.”
If approved, the levy would provide stable operational funding for two full-time firefighter/EMT positions to work alongside the Chief, helping ensure consistent response coverage, improved firefighter safety, and enhanced service reliability throughout the district.
