At CASA of Central Oregon, we recognize the unique challenges many LGBTQ+ youth face and the importance of ensuring every child feels safe, supported, and valued for who they are.

LGBTQ+ youth are overrepresented in foster care, often due to family rejection, abuse, neglect, or other circumstances that bring them into the child welfare system. That is why LGBTQ+ youth and their experiences are an important part of CASA volunteer training. We dedicate time to understanding the challenges these youth may face and how advocates can provide affirming, informed support.

This month, we celebrate LGBTQ+ youth and reaffirm our commitment to ensuring every child has someone in their corner who listens, advocates, and helps them feel seen and supported.

📚 CASA Book Club Reminder!

It is not too late to join us for our upcoming quarterly book club discussion on June 12th, discussing "The Many Lives of Mama Love" by Lara Love Hardin. This powerful memoir explores addiction, incarceration, redemption, and the challenges of rebuilding a life after the justice system.

Whether you have already started reading or are just picking up a copy, we would love to have you join the conversation. Please RSVP by Monday, June 8, on ARC and come ready for a thoughtful discussion with fellow CASA volunteers.

At CASA of Central Oregon, we know children do best when they can safely maintain connections with their families. That is why reunification with parents is the primary goal in most child welfare cases in Oregon.

In fact, the majority of local foster care cases end in reunification with parents. Some result in guardianship with relatives or kinship caregivers, and only about 3% end in adoption.

CASA volunteers advocate for services that help families overcome barriers like housing, food insecurity, and treatment. Throughout the process, CASA advocates work to ensure each child's safety, needs, and voice remain at the center of every decision.

A heartfelt thank you to the Clabough Foundation for their generous support of CASA! This grant will help us continue providing trained, trauma informed advocates for children in foster care across Central Oregon. Because of community partners like the Clabough Foundation, more children will have a consistent voice and caring adult by their side during difficult times.

We are grateful to the Bend City Council for officially proclaiming May as Foster Care Awareness Month during a recent council meeting. We were also honored to accept proclamations from the cities of Madras and Prineville in recognition of this important month.

Thank you to each council for helping raise awareness around the experiences of children and youth in foster care and for recognizing the importance of community support and advocacy. Together, we can continue working toward brighter futures for children across Central Oregon.

Only one more week before our upcoming CASA volunteer training starts on June 4!

We need few more community members to step up and make a difference in the life of a child in foster care. As a CASA volunteer, you can be the consistent voice and support a child needs during a difficult time. All you need is a few hours a months and a heart for children. Join by yourself or with someone and double your impact.

Do not wait to get involved. Applications are still open for a few more days and we would love to have you in this training class.

This month, we are proud to recognize Tari for her incredible dedication to CASA and the children she serves. For more than four years, Tari has been a steadfast advocate, taking on challenging cases, including sibling groups, with compassion, consistency, and unwavering commitment.

Beyond her advocacy work, Tari has also stepped into leadership roles by joining our Board of Directors and serving on our Development Committee, helping plan events and raise critical funds to support the training of future CASA volunteers. She brings the important perspective of a CASA advocate into every space she serves.
