Supe's on! We flipped the script to ask Superintendent Cook the questions.

🎙️ A new school year — and a new twist on The Supe's On!

For the first episode of his sixth podcast season, Superintendent Steven Cook switches seats and becomes the guest. Communications Director Scott Maben asks Dr. Cook about leading Bend-La Pine Schools, staying connected to classrooms, working with the School Board, preparing for a new school year, and what families can expect in 2026-27.

They also talk school construction, new instructional and grading practices, student assessments, family communication — and what it’s like when the superintendent steps in as a kindergarten substitute teacher.

Get your kiddos moving to school—walking, biking, and rolling! Safe Routes to School helps make active transportation safer and more accessible for families. Whether students walk, use a mobility device, bike, scooter, skateboard, or ride the bus, the program supports safe and enjoyable ways to get to school. Active trips help kids arrive healthier, happier, and ready to learn, while safer streets benefit the whole community.

Our partners at Commute Options offer numerous biking and walking maps for our school neighborhoods. Check out blschools.org/parent-resources/safe-routes for your map and upcoming events.

Students, teachers and families will see changes in student use of technology this year. These include reduced access to iPads for elementary students; keeping iPads at school for middle school students; and restricted YouTube access for high school students.

We invite you to learn more about each of these changes in a letter from Deputy Superintendent Lisa Birk. Go to bls.fyi/BLStech2026.

In Bend-La Pine Schools, all of the materials students need for instruction are provided. Families are welcome to provide personal items such as backpacks, water bottles, and headphones.

While it’s important for parents and guardians to know they aren’t expected to send their students to school with notebooks, pencils, glue sticks, crayons and all the other supplies, we also have families that appreciate the opportunity to contribute to classroom supplies. If you have new school supplies you’d like to donate to your student’s classroom or the school, we are always grateful for the support. You may bring these in during your school's Welcome Back activities.
