In honor of International Laboratory Animal Technician Week (January 29th- February 4th, 2017), SCAW would like to recognize and thank our outstanding laboratory animal technicians. Technicians give animals a voice by advocating for animal welfare, providing them with the best care possible and ensuring their daily lives are enriched. Technicians also give animals a voice through the samples they collect, the daily observations they record and the procedures they preform. This voice will one day be translated into scientific knowledge that has the potential to be heard by all. Please take a moment this week to thank your laboratory animal techs, and technicians please know that you truly do give animals a voice.

This post might be of interest and useful for teaching, outreach, and promoting understanding of how the US regulatory system works with respect to animal research. It is not uncommon that members of the public, including students, believe that there are no federal laws, regulation, or oversight of research with rats, mice, and birds. That is obviously not true, but is a myth that can be difficult to counter. It is an important point to address in order to have accurate and informed public views.
