North Star's Kinder Connection event was a hit! Incoming kindergarten students and their families participated in a school scavenger hunt, ending in popsicles on the playground. They even got to take a ride on a a real bus! Thank you to all the families for showing up and making it such a great event, we can't wait for our newest Navigators to start in the fall!

Our Navigators were thrilled to welcome Aron Nels Steinke to North Star yesterday! Students loved learning about how he draws his graphic novels and how he uses real events in his life as inspiration for his books.

If your student wants to get a book signed by Aron or ask him more questions, he will be at Roundabout Books on Thursday 4/30 6:30-7:30 signing books and connecting with kids.

Thanks to PTO for another great author visit!!

Time to clean out your closets, garages, and shoe cubbies! How many pairs of athletic shoes do you have squirreled away that your kids have outgrown, you’ve worn out, or the dog nibbled on? And that you keep meaning to deal with… one day… somehow? Green Team and Running Club are teaming up to launch a sneaker recycling fundraiser from April 27 through May 29!

Quick facts:

Athletic shoes with any level of wear and tear are welcomed.

Depending on the level of wear, we can earn up to $7 / pair. Green Team students selected The Environmental Center as the beneficiary.

Non-athletic shoes are not accepted, including, but not limited to: dress shoes, heels, sandals, wedges, water socks, rain boots, crocs, and other styles.

No single shoes.

Simply drop shoes in the bin at the front of the school April 27 through May 29! This lines up with spring Running Club, which runs May 5 through June 4.

For this endeavor, we’re partnering with www.GotSneakers.com. They report that, in the U.S. alone, 200 million pairs of shoes and sneakers end up in landfills every year. Meanwhile, more than 600 million people worldwide don’t own a pair of shoes. Donated shoes that are barely worn are recirculated to the secondhand economy, increasing access to quality shoes. The rest are recycled, keeping them out of landfills where they would spend years decomposing and leaking toxic chemicals into the environment.

TYIA for supporting Environmental Center, our Green Team students, Running Club, and the earth!
