For more than 100 years, “The Gulf” in Bennettsville stood as a powerful symbol of resilience, progress, and community. During a time when African Americans faced countless barriers and limited opportunities, “The Gulf” became a place where visionaries built, served, healed, taught, preached, farmed, and led.

Bankers, dentists, physicians, pharmacists, educators, ministers, attorneys, farmers, and entrepreneurs all helped shape the prosperity of this historic African American business and cultural district. Before integration, it was also a treasured gathering place for entertainment and relaxation, sometimes welcoming 200 to 300 people on weekends. 🎶

“The Gulf” reminds us how democracy, freedom, ownership, and opportunity can transform a community. Just one generation after emancipation, African Americans in Bennettsville were owning property, opening businesses, and creating a true Renaissance period.

Today, we honor “The Gulf” and the remarkable people who led the way. ✨

We had a great time today as Elizabeth Chew, CEO of the South Carolina Historical Society, gave a presentation on Art and the American Revolution in the Murchison Auditorium. This was part of the Society’s Stories Around the State initiative, funded by the SC250 Commission. Thanks to everyone who made it possible here in Marlboro County!
