Hi everyone,

Captain Harrington and Lieutenant Legacy of the Bennington County Sheriff’s Department were honored to help with the dignified transfer of the late World War II soldier, Private First Class (PFC) Bernard Sweet.

On Thursday, July 30, the recently identified remains of PFC Sweet returned to Bennington after more than 80 years. PFC Sweet, who made the ultimate sacrifice in 1942, was Bennington‘s first reported casualty of World War II.

More than eight decades later, PFC Sweet’s family received life-changing news when a DNA match positively identified his remains, bringing long-awaited answers and making it possible to bring him home.

Upon his arrival at Bradley International Airport in Connecticut, PFC Sweet was met by a motorcycle es**rt from Bennington’s VFW Post 1332, along with state and local law-enforcement agencies, who accompanied him on his final journey back to the community he called home.

It was a privilege for the Bennington County Sheriff’s Department to take part in the solemn dignified transfer, ensuring that PFC Sweet was welcomed home with honor, dignity, and respect he so richly deserved.

This incident involves the alleged theft of approximately $192.00 worth of gasoline from Stewart’s in Pownal, Vermont.

When you see our sheriff’s deputies es**rting an extremely heavy or oversized load down the highway, it’s about much more than moving cargo from one place to another—it's about public safety.

These loads can weigh hundreds of thousands of pounds, take up multiple lanes, require wider turning radiuses, and often travel at reduced speeds. Our sheriff’s department provides es**rts year-round to help manage traffic, warn motorists of upcoming hazards, coordinate temporary road closures, and ensure loads can safely navigate bridges, intersections, and other challenging areas.

Without proper traffic control, the risk of crashes, congestion, property damage, and injuries increases significantly. Escorting these loads helps protect not only the transport crew, but every driver sharing the road.

The next time you encounter an oversized load with a law enforcement es**rt, remember that a tremendous amount of planning, coordination, and safety management is taking place to keep everyone safe and traffic moving as smoothly as possible.

The Bennington County Sheriff’s Department recognizes Lieutenant Scott Legacy and Deputy Emily Calkins for their exceptional service and dedication to safer highways. Both were honored at the 2025 Law Enforcement Recognition Awards hosted by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Vermont.

The Certificates of Appreciation highlights their outstanding commitment to MADD’s mission: ending drunk driving, combating drugged driving, supporting victims, and protecting youth from underage drinking.

This is the time of year we always look forward to.

Captain Harrington, our friend Dan Lucy, and I have the privilege of reading many outstanding essays from high school students across the state of Vermont, all competing for three VSAC scholarships we proudly oversee:

•The Wallace Mattison Scholarship.
•The Vermont Sheriffs’ Association Scholarship.
•The Vermont Sheriffs’ Association: William Graham Scholarship.

Each of the three selected students will receive $1,000 to help support their educational goals.

So far, we’ve been incredibly impressed - so many thoughtful, well-written essays. Choosing this year’s recipients will not be easy!

Hi everyone,

The Bennington County Sheriff’s Department was honored to host the 2026 SkillsUSA Vermont Criminal Justice and Crime Scene Investigation competitions on Wednesday, April 8th.

Students and instructors from Southwest Tech , Stafford Technical Center , Randolph Technical Career Center , and River Valley Tech Center participated in a series of rigorous, hands-on assessments designed to evaluate their knowledge and practical skills in the field of criminal justice.

Detectives from the Vermont State Police Major Crimes Unit and the Rutland City Police Department conducted evaluations as students processed a simulated crime scene. Additionally, members of the Bennington County Sheriff’s Department assessed participants during scenario-based exercises, including a suspicious person investigation, a traffic stop, and a formal oral board interview.

We commend all students for their professionalism, preparedness, and dedication. The top competitors in Criminal Justice and Crime Scene Investigation will go on to represent the State of Vermont at the SkillsUSA National Championships in June 2025 in Atlanta, Georgia.

I have attached this educational snapshot to help guide you when confronted with a scammer.
