05/24/2026 9:58PM:

Mescal-J6 Fire District was dispatched to a UTV rollover accident with coordinates off the Emperita Road Exit.

We requested and received assistance from the Pima County Sheriff's Department air unit and their Search & Rescue Deputies to locate 3 adult patients, two in critical but stable condition.

North County EMS assumed patient care triaging the subjects and made the decision to fly two of the patient’s out by helicopter. All subjects are expected to make a full recovery.

We’d like to take this opportunity to share some important safety tips. These folks were out with others and fortunately had cellphone service to call for help. If you’re going out exploring back country areas please remember:

Ride with someone else or leave a written plan or general area, trails, stops, etc.

Ride in a group in remote areas
Tell someone your route and expected return time.
Carry water, a phone or radio, first-aid kit, tire repair kit, and basic tools.

Wear the right gear

Helmet (even if your state doesn’t require one).
Eye protection if there’s no full windshield.
Long sleeves, long pants, gloves, and over-the-ankle boots.
Seat belt always—a UTV’s roll cage works best when you stay inside it.

Riding safely

Keep hands, arms, feet, and legs inside the vehicle at all times. Never try to brace yourself during a rollover.
Match speed to terrain. Most crashes happen from going too fast for conditions.
Slow down before turns—UTVs can roll if cornered aggressively.
Climb hills straight up or down when possible; avoid side-hilling on steep slopes.
Avoid paved roads unless your model is street-legal and local laws allow it; UTV tires and handling are designed for off-road.
Don’t overload passengers—only carry as many people as there are seat belts.
Never let kids drive vehicles beyond their age/size/skill level.

Big rollover prevention rules

Sharp turns + speed = rollover risk.
Be extra careful on:
Loose gravel
Sand washes
Steep embankments
Uneven desert terrain and ruts
Shift body weight naturally but stay seated and belted.

Absolute no-go’s

Alcohol or drugs while riding.
Standing while moving.
Riding without seat belts.
Letting passengers sit in cargo beds.

Be safe out there!!!

🚒🔥 BIG UPGRADE FOR MESCAL-J6 FIRE DISTRICT 🔥🚒

Big things are rolling into the Mescal area — and this one is all about helping keep the community safer.

After roughly 16 months of persistence, planning, and advocacy, the Mescal-J6 Fire Department has officially added a new brush truck to its fleet through a Bureau of Land Management donation program — a major boost for local emergency response capabilities.

While the truck may not be brand new, it arrives in excellent condition and represents a significant upgrade over the department’s previous brush unit, offering improved capacity, capability, and efficiency where it matters most.

Fire Chief Ed Nied says this addition is especially important because of the district’s large wildland-urban interface — areas where homes and structures sit near undeveloped land and where access during emergencies can often be challenging. The new truck is designed to better handle those conditions and improve response effectiveness.

“This acquisition also aligns with the department’s broader strategic plan, particularly its focus on improving operational readiness,” Nied shared. “With enhanced equipment, firefighters are better prepared to respond quickly and effectively to emergencies, ultimately improving service to the community.”

Before entering full service, the truck will be equipped with department-specific gear, and there are even plans to potentially repaint it to match the department’s signature red fleet — although officials say getting it into service remains the priority.

Mescal-J6 Fire Board Member Wade H. Temple II also emphasized the direct impact resources like this have on public safety and the improved protection residents can expect moving forward.

Congratulations to Mescal-J6 Fire Department on this exciting addition — and thank you to the firefighters and leadership continuing to invest in protecting our communities.

Thank you Bureau of Land Management - Arizona for the donation of the brush truck, we are incredibly thankful!!!

We’d also like to extend our appreciation to Mia Longoria and Cochise County Voice for taking the time to come out to Station 171, take photos and do an amazing write up.

Out of all the media outlets we invited, Cochise County Voice was the only one who came out!!!

Law enforcement agencies across the country and here in Arizona have been and will continue participating in the Click it or Ticket campaign for the rest of May.

While not wearing your seatbelt is a secondary offense in Arizona meaning it isn’t a primary reason for an Officer to pull you over, buckling up only takes just a few seconds and it can save your life! We’ve seen first it hand. Seat belts are your best defense in a crash — whether you’re driving across town or just down the street.

Before you put the car in drive:
✅ Buckle up
✅ Make sure passengers are buckled up
✅ Set a good example for young riders

No excuses. No distractions. Click it or ticket!
