Notification that the State Issued Ban on open burning will be lifted this morning at 8:00am for Johnston County a long with many other counties but not all 100 counties.

Reminder, there is no open burning allowed inside the town limits of Benson at anytime. Yes, you can have a grill to cook on and yes you can have a small outdoor door burn pit, however, you can only burn firewood and limbs.

Remember, open burning is legal outside of the town limits however you may not at anytime anywhere in NC burn household trash, clothes, furniture, plastics, tires, wire, buildings, barns, and building materials such as processed lumber or plywood etc.

If you are unsure what you can burn or if you are inside or outside of the town limits, call the fire station at 919-894-8990 and we will do our best to help you and get your questions answered.

Also, there are several county dumps sights around us with the closest one being in YS 301 just before South Johnston High School and all Johnston County residents including the Town of Benson residents are allowed to take these items to these sights free of charge.

When burning, always be careful, have a water hose close by and never leave any fire unattended for any amount of time.

Thank you for your understanding and we always thank you for your support!

A statewide burn ban will be in effect beginning at 6:00 pm (3/28/26). Issued burning permits will be canceled and new permits will not be issued while the ban is in effect.

Due to increased wildfire risk, the N.C. Forest Service has issued a ban on all open burning and has canceled all burning permits statewide effective 6 p.m. Saturday, March 28 until further notice.

Under North Carolina law, the ban prohibits all open burning in the affected counties, regardless of whether a permit was previously issued. The issuance of any new permits has also been suspended until the ban is lifted. Anyone violating the burn ban faces a $100 fine plus $183 court costs. Any person responsible for setting a fire may be liable for any expenses related to extinguishing the fire.

The burn ban does not apply to fires started within 100 feet of an occupied dwelling. The local fire marshal has authority to issue a burn ban within those 100 feet.
