Labor Day Weekend Boat Safety:

Labor Day weekend is one of the busiest times of the year on Kentucky waterways. A few simple precautions can help make sure the weekend ends safely.
Before You Leave the Dock
• Wear a properly fitted life jacket — especially children and anyone who isn't a strong swimmer.
• Check the weather before heading out and monitor conditions while you're on the water.
• Inspect your boat — fuel, battery, lights, bilge pump, navigation equipment and steering.
• Carry required safety equipment, including a throwable flotation device, fire extinguisher and signaling devices.
• Tell someone where you're going and when you expect to return.
• Don't overload the boat.
While You're On the Water
• Never operate a boat under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Designate a sober operator.
• Keep a proper lookout for swimmers, other boats, kayaks, jet skis and obstacles.
• Maintain a safe speed, particularly around marinas, docks and crowded areas.
• Keep passengers seated when the boat is moving.
• Stay clear of the stern when the engine is running. Carbon monoxide can build up near the back of a boat.
• Use extra caution after dark and make sure navigation lights are working.
If Something Goes Wrong
• Stay calm and put on your life jacket.
• If someone falls overboard, keep them in sight and throw flotation.
• Call 911 for an emergency and provide your location as accurately as possible.
• Don't attempt a rescue that puts you or others in additional danger.
Remember: Life jackets save lives, sober boaters prevent accidents, and a little preparation can make for a great Labor Day weekend on the water.

Research shows that families grieving a su***de loss can experience stigma through blame, judgment, avoidance and even silence.

A 2026 systematic review brought together 27 studies examining the experiences of family members bereaved by su***de. Researchers found recurring experiences of stigma and anticipated judgment, secrecy and withdrawal, and even silence surrounding the person who died.

Think about what that means for a grieving family.

After losing someone they love, some families find themselves facing questions they never expected to answer.

- Why didn't you know?
- Could you have stopped it?
- Why did they do it?

Others experience something quieter. People stop asking about their loved one. Their name isn't mentioned. Conversations become uncomfortable. The way they died begins to overshadow the life they lived.

We can do better. Say their Veteran's name. Listen to their stories.
Don't make a family defend the person they loved or explain their grief. And don't let the manner of a Veteran's death become the only thing remembered about their life.

No family should feel invisible.
