Duties and Roles of the County Clerk:

Local Election Authority - administer all elections in the County including absentee voting and voter registration. Budget Officer - plan and develop the County budget for the Commission's approval. HR/Payroll Office for County personnel. Administrative functions such as issuing notary commissions and liquor licenses, accounts payable, tax levies, and more.

It's Election Day! Polls are open from 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM.

Important reminders:
- This is a primary election so you must choose a party ballot to vote on candidates. If you only want to vote on the Constitutional Amendments and local ballot measures, you can choose a Non-Partisan ballot which will not contain candidates. This is Missouri law.
- Photo ID is required. A drivers license, nondrivers license, passport, or military ID is most common.
- Thank the election judges at your polling place. Scott County elections could not happen without their service to our community!

Missouri law prohibits electioneering at polling places on Election Day. This includes displaying signs or wearing items related to any candidate or question on the ballot inside the polling place or within 25 feet of the outer door. Please respect Missouri's election laws so poll workers can attend to helping voters in an efficient manner.

CLASS FOUR ELECTION OFFENSE:
115.637 (18) Exit polling, surveying, sampling, electioneering, distributing election literature, posting signs or placing vehicles bearing signs with respect to any candidate or question to be voted on at an election on election day inside the building in which a polling place is located or within twenty-five feet of the building's outer door closest to the polling place, or, on the part of any person, refusing to remove or permit removal from property owned or controlled by such person, any such election sign or literature located within such distance on such day after request for removal by any person.

The August 4th Election is a primary election, which allows each political party to select its nominees for the November General Election.

Candidates appear only on the ballot of the political party with which they filed for office.

Missouri has an open primary system, meaning registered voters may choose which political party's ballot they wish to vote in each primary election.

For this election, three political party ballots are available:
- Republican
- Democratic
- Libertarian

To vote for candidates seeking nomination, you must select one of these party ballots. Each party ballot also includes all applicable statewide and local ballot measures.

Voters who wish to vote only on statewide and local ballot measures may request a Non-Partisan Ballot. The Non-Partisan Ballot does not include any candidates for office.

A photo ID is required to vote! The most common options are drivers license, nondrivers license, passport, or military ID.

Voters without acceptable photo ID may cast a provisional ballot. The voter's ballot will count if:
- The voter returns to the polling place on Election Day and shows an acceptable photo ID -OR-
- The voter’s signature on the provisional ballot envelope matches the signature on their voter registration record

Requirements:
- A registered voter
- Able to work a long day (5:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.)
- Have reliable transportation
- Be of good character
- Able to maintain a bi-partisan spirit

Voting Options for the August 4, 2026 Primary Election

1. Election Day. Cast your ballot at your assigned polling place on Tuesday, August 4, 2026. The polls are open 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

2. Absentee Voting at the Courthouse. Early voting (no-excuse absentee voting) begins on Tuesday, July 21, 2026. Any voter can cast their ballot at the County Clerk’s Office at the Scott County Courthouse in Benton. Normal office hours are Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The County Clerk’s Office will also be open on Saturday, August 1, 2026 from 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon for voting.

If you are unable to come into the Courthouse, please call 573-545-3549 x 4 and we will assist you curbside!

3. Absentee Voting by Mail. Submit an absentee request in writing to have a ballot mailed to you. The deadline to submit a request is Wednesday, July 22, 2026 at 5:00 p.m. Your ballot envelope must be notarized before returning your voted ballot (unless you are incapacitated or disabled). Also take into account mail time as your voted ballot must be received in the County Clerk’s Office by Election Day to be counted.

You must present a photo ID (Missouri driver/non-driver license, Passport, or Military ID) to vote in person.

This is a primary election so you must be prepared to select which party ballot you wish to vote on: Republican, Democratic, or Libertarian. A non-partisan ballot is available if you wish to vote on the ballot measures (no candidates will appear on the non-partisan ballot).
