Today we honor the life of Retired Deputy Chief Greg Hecht with Cape FD taken from us too soon. We were called into action to help cover Station 4 so that the department could attend the funeral. Also Chief Mack along with Firefighters Eastmon, Kelley and Young were honored to help raise and lower the flag for the ceremony.

Here are a few words from Cape Girardeau Fire Department regarding retired Deputy Chief Greg Hecht:
It is with heavy hearts that the Cape Girardeau Fire Department announces the passing of retired Deputy Chief Greg Hecht.

Chief Hecht served the department from January 2021 to April 2026, holding the roles of Battalion Chief/Fire Marshal and Deputy Chief. Those who worked alongside him remember him as a man of quiet humility, whose consistent optimism and ability to find good in any situation brought light to even the most difficult days.

Chief Hecht was deeply dedicated to the craft of firefighting and to lifelong learning. He pursued that dedication through continued education at the National Fire Academy, a place he had come to love as a source of renewal and inspiration for his calling. Above all, he believed in leading by example, and he carried that principle with him daily throughout his career.

Chief Hecht leaves a legacy of strength, humility, and unwavering commitment to those he served alongside and those he protected.
We ask that you keep the Hecht family in your thoughts and prayers during this time of loss.

Praying for all of City of Jackson and city of Cape Girardeau fire departments and all of his family and friends. Mr Hecht was a great man, he will be missed.

It is with profound sadness that the Southeast Missouri Professional Firefighters Association, IAFF Local 1084, announces the passing of Retired Deputy Fire Chief Greg Hecht.

Greg dedicated his life to serving the citizens of Cape Girardeau County and Southeast Missouri. Throughout his distinguished career, he served alongside many of us as a Firefighter, Fire Captain, Training Officer, Battalion Chief, and Deputy Fire Chief. More importantly, Greg was a friend, mentor, and leader who positively impacted countless firefighters throughout his career. His knowledge, professionalism, and commitment to the fire service helped shape generations of firefighters and left a lasting legacy within all of our departments.

On behalf of the officers and members of the Southeast Missouri Professional Firefighters Association, IAFF Local 1084, we extend our deepest condolences, thoughts, and prayers to Greg's family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched.

As we remember and celebrate Greg's life, we ask that you keep his family, his friends, and our entire fire service family in your thoughts and prayers. His dedication to the fire service, unwavering leadership, and commitment to helping others will never be forgotten.
