Congratulations go out to Victoria Stillwell Holmes, PCRD Administrative Assistant, for earning her Certified County Finance Officer (CCFO) certification!

The CCFO program is designed to train county personnel in governmental accounting, budgeting, fiscal management, and internal controls during small group sessions over a year long cycle. It was developed jointly by the Tennessee Comptroller of the Treasury and the University of Tennessee’s County Technical Assistance Service (CTAS) to guide those who have financial oversight.

Pictured are Jason Mumpower, Comptroller of the Treasury of Tennessee; Holmes; and Dr. Herb Byrd III, vice president of the University of Tennessee Institute of Public Service.

The Chestuee Bridge was officially opened with a ribbon cutting event on Thursday, June 4th. This new construction bridge represents a $1 million asset for Polk County with a 100 year expected lifespan.

Plans and paperwork began in 2016 with a need to redesign it in a manner to improve flooding in the area. The final result is a reprofile and raised elevation for the road, while the location of the bridge shifted to accommodate the changing water flow of the creek.

Lifelong Chestuee resident and former Polk County Executive, Hoyt Firestone, spoke on the history of the bridge, highlighting those in the community who helped build the original wooden “floating” bridge while recalling stories told across generations.

Thank you to the Polk County Chamber of Commerce for helping to commemorate the event and inviting everyone to attend. Special thanks to Collier Engineering, Summers-Taylor, Inc, and the Polk County Road Department crew.

As you travel across the new bridge, please take time to notice the hand-set stone foundation from the original wooden “floating” bridge that was preserved as a reminder to future generations.

“I’m very pleased with the result as this is the 5th State Aid bridge project during my time in office. Thank you for allowing me to serve as your road superintendent.”

Polk County is developing a Comprehensive Safety Action Plan to address roadway safety in the unincorporated areas of the county pictured. The 5 minute survey linked below, collects input from residents on the types of projects that should be considered, and how proposed recommendations should be prioritized for both state and county roadways in the study area.

Responses to this needs survey are being collected between now and April 1,2026.

Thank you for your participation, and for your concern to seek funding for safety improvements on Polk County roads.

PLEASE SHARE TO HELP REACH THE 5,000 RESPONSES NEEDED BY APRIL 1!

The new construction Easley Ford Bridge is moving along, as beams have been placed.

This $4.5 million dollar project is part of the federal bridge program, awarded to Wright Brothers Construction, and managed by TDOT. It consists of building a new bridge north of the old one, that will greatly improve the safety for those traveling the Easley Ford Road area.

Grant proceeds for this $4.5 million project are being provided by the federal government, but not covering 100% of the cost. Required matching funds are coming from the Polk County Road Department budget, adding another 100 year asset to the county.

❄️🚧 All county maintained roads remain open and emergency routes have been cleared. There is still snow and icy patches in shaded areas ❄️🚧

Road conditions are dependent upon temperatures and could deteriorate throughout the night and tomorrow with below freezing predictions. We anticipate black ice and ask motorists to use caution and travel as necessary.

Thank you to those who have kept crews fed and watered all weekend as several businesses have been closed and places to stop were minimal. Pictures show Welcome Valley Rd, taken 10 feet apart as an example of icy patches in shaded areas.

❄️🚧Crews have been out all morning working to clear emergency routes across the county. This is a dry snow with frigid temperatures but as fast as we can clear roads, more snow is falling. Efforts will continue while we assess as we go.

No roads are closed at this time and motorists are asked to travel only if necessary and use extreme caution if you must get out. We will update as needed.

❄️⚠️Road Update⚠️❄️

Crews have been working since around 3 AM assessing road conditions. Heavy patches of black ice with early morning snow are showing all across the county. Winds should help roadways to dry out and improve conditions over the next few days.

County maintained roads remain under advisory until temperatures are above freezing. State routes are in fair to good condition.

Motorists are asked to use caution and travel only if necessary.
